Working for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Educational System, does not present an opportunity to evaluate its performances as a publicly traded company, due to it being a not-for-profit government organization. In as much, DCPS does normally set out strategic efforts, which are not as simple as one may view (Schmitz, 2012), by establishing and completing the list of five-year strategies (DCPS, 2017) in which can be evaluated from several key performances based on planned strategic goals set. These mapped out plans ultimately will determine how well they overall accomplish its visionary mission as a public educational institution (Schmitz, 2012). According to Schmitz (2012), realizing on these planned goals, must be …show more content…
As pointed out by Schmitz (2012), how well an industry and the executives abilities to manage strategies, changes and challenges, will weigh heavy on and influence successes as well as failures, which are mapped out in Porter’s Five Forces and the very well known as “The Five P’s.”
There are two larger eminent competitors and two substitutions within the education industry that DCPS must keep vigilant that creates a threat, due to rivalry and the competitiveness of receiving federal funds based first on student enrollment – these forces are attributed from Porter’s Five. One is the for-profit educational institution or private school sector – this is where prominent families would chose based on financial status or legacy; and where families also seek scholarship funding to assist in meeting paid obligation. The second and most relevant threat lies with the Public Charter School (PCS), who has picked up at least one-third of DCPS’s student population within the last 2 years – moreover, has eroded the growth of DCPS enrollment from 73,000 students in 2010, according to Ashby (2010), to around 49,000 in present 2017 (DCPS, 2017). This could eventually demise the lifecycle of the DCPS and other state-wide public schools alike. A third is the ability of new entries of increasing home
It was with wild fanfare that the state’s Republican legislature and Republican Governor enacted their reforms for the state’s public school system. Among the panaceas was charter schools, a ‘90s education fad that gives individual parents the right to send their children to state-approved public charter schools at public expense. Politicians reasoned that less-bureaucratic charter schools would teach students better than traditional public schools because charter schools wouldn’t be subject to the same mandates that the state had heaped upon public schools. Furthermore, traditional schools would be forced to compete with charter schools as they lured thousands
The debate around charter schools is controversial because it’s about the future of American children, especially those children that have been disenfranchised by the public school system. It also touches on major issues like how much control the government should have over education and the benefits of organized labor in the classroom (Slade, 2016). The stakeholders on both sides of this issue are parents, students, teachers, teacher unions, local school committees, and finally state and national legislators.
For decades the American education system provided parents with three choices: public, homeschool or private school. If they chose public then their child(ren) would be assigned to a school past on where they lived. However , “in the early 1990s a handful of states created independent public charter schools, providing opportunities for teachers and others to develop innovative schooling options “ (Palmer, Louann 2007). Not only did the creation of charter schools provide opportunities for the teachers, but gave parents a fourth option in educating their child(ren). Some veiw charter schools as a welcome addition to the public school sector, others doubt the benefit of these schools. There
Introduction of charter schools have led to the enhancement of the education sector by providing the necessary competition (Fabricant et al.49). The competition posed by charter schools have made the traditional public schools to be more conscious on the way they offer their services like customer service. Attitudes such as “take or leave it” have been decreasing in the public schools as they know that parents and their students have other option of enrolling in a charter school. Competition have also enhanced the way decisions are made in the public sector like how the curriculum is rolled out. This competition is vital for the growth and development of the education sector in the United States of
Porter’s model aims to enable managers not only to understand their industry environment but also to shape their firm’s strategy. The five competitive forces are threat of entry, power of suppliers, power of buyers, threat of substitutes, and rivalry among existing competitors. “As a rule of thumb, the stronger the five forces, the lower the industry’s profit potential- making the industry less attractive to competitors. The weaker the five forces, the greater the industry’s profit potential – making the industry more attractive” (Rothaermel, 2013, p. 65). It is recommended that managers position their company in an industry in such a way that relaxes the constraints of strong forces and
The current sanctions placed on the York City School District by the Pennsylvania Department of Education have intrigued me since the day I started working at Jackson Elementary there three years ago. YCSD ranked 490th out of 496th school districts in the state of Pennsylvania in 2015. Last school year they did not improve as expected, according to the latest reports just released by the State Department of Education. The district has some goals to meet, which include cutting in half the gap between the district’s reading and math Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores and the state average, as well as cutting the gap between the district’s third grade reading scores and the state average.
According to the Kennett Consolidated School District (2007), “the mission of the district is to provide a quality education that increases the achievement
DC Public Schools (DCPS) has an overall mission to provide a “world-class education” that furthers provide all students with the necessary skill sets and learned experiences to take the students beyond high school and college (DC Public School, 2017). Through this bigger goal, that creating of smaller objectives guidelines that are more manageable that set to the overall agency. My program tasked with strategically planning objective to help reach agency, local/federal mandate, while providing first class services to each program. Therefore, assessing our customers and understanding their needs is crucial. Adversely, it can be a difficult task if not capable of differentiate and segmenting students accordingly.
I. Introduction – The Montgomery Education Foundation is a foundation centered around bettering the public-school system. The Montgomery County overall report card score is a 79/C. Montgomery County needs teacher quality, parental /community involvement, funding & overall student achievement to raise the lingering “C” to an “A”. Public schools have a disadvantage when it comes to funding. According to https://www.washingtonpost.com/news, recent research, has found that when schools have more money, they are able to give their students a better education.
Porter’s five forces can be interpreted as a tool that not only shapes the industry as a whole, but also determines the industry’s areas of strength and weakness. This model can serve as a guideline that establishes a company’s current situation or position within the market as it relates to five key aspects. The five aspects or forces allocate the competitive influence or power as it relates to business. Porter’s five forces include: threat of new entrants, customer power, supplier power, competition and substitutions. In relevance to My Career City:
Porter’s five forces will have a great impact on the company we chose and the industry as a whole - the threat potential
In talking strategy for any company, Porter’s Five Forces Model is likely to come up. It has served as a strategic planning guideline for years. If a company is just starting out, they would have to analyze the model and apply it to themselves from every aspect. If a company is well established, the model can serve as points that need to constantly be revisited. In going global, the tool becomes invaluable. It still only serves as a guideline, but it delivers significant points that have to be examined in a different culture of diverse laws and governmental controls. The following paragraphs will describe Porter’s Five Forces Model, describe how it can assist in going global, and examine possible limitations
The five competitve forces that shape strategy also know as Porter’s five forces was first pubilshed in 1979 in the Harvard Business Review by a young associate professor at the Harvard Business School, Michael E. Porter. This article started a revolution in the strategy field and has since than shaped a generation of academic research and business practise. Throughout the last thirty years Porter’s Five Forces Analysis has been the most used strategy tool in academics as well as management training. (Porter, 2008) Porter used a certain structure for his study, called framework. In a framework only the smallest number of core elements are used to capture the full richness
Porter’s five forces analysis not only provides the ideas to create the strategic plan but also assesses the attractiveness of an industry.
Porter 's Five-force model is a theoretical guide to understanding the pressures that are felt by an industry, and by analogy, on a company. It can be used in such a way as to allow “the strategic business manager seeking to develop an edge over rival firms … to better understand the industry context in which the firm operates” (Porter, 1999). The key to any successful (e.g. profitable) business venture is an understanding of the differentiating factors that contribute to a higher-profit, lower-cost operation. Porter 's model, while helpful, is not flawless, and is not able to escape the need for modern interpretation. However, with inclusion of
