As a social work facilitator, taking on a democratic role and style can be helpful. When a facilitator takes on a democratic stance, they allow members to decide how they wish to work as a group to meet their goals and objective as group (Skillsyou need, 2016). In this role, the facilitator is usually at group meetings playing an active role by suggesting alternative ways of handling or approaching particular issues (Skillsyou need, 2016). The facilitator does not have to give advice; they can also act as active listeners and point out interesting or significant aspects that occur in the group. Instead of the facilitator taking full control of the group structure, each member can be key contributors as a way to foster leadership in all the
Profession of social work as a career goal Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
Career Path There are so many career path options. What is good for one, is not always good for all. I have been contemplating many different options and I have finally chosen one. The career path I have chosen is to take the summer off and work at home doing day care. Then return to Argosy University in September, to start my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration on child adolescents. During which, I will volunteer with a local organization called the Family Promise of Green County. Finally I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree in 2018 and get a job in Green County Human Services as a social worker. I have chosen this path because it suits my educational needs and balances my family and work needs. My only concern is not having the face to face communication, which I believe is important in the preparation of a psychology degree. However, by taking a volunteer position with the Family Promise Organization of Green County, I hope to get this experience. This paper will identify my skills and experiences needed for this path along with the skills and experiences I already have. Additionally, I will identify my strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, I will create a plan for meeting these goals and gaining these skills and experiences.
I am in college for one reason and one reason only; to further my education and earn a degree. Coming to SBU has always been my dream, I have always had an appreciation for the fact that by attending this university I can get a Christian based education. Beginning my journey here at SBU I have already wrestled with deciding on a major. Upon my arrival I thought I was going into English Education and then soon after I arrived I had decided on Christian Ministry, but again decided that wasn’t right for me. That process is what has brought me to where I am today; pursuing a degree in Social Work.
December 2016 I received my bachelors in social work. Through earning this degree I have learned so much more than I could have ever imagined. From all the papers, group projects, presentations, volunteer work, and field placement I not only grew as a future social worker, I grew as a student. Over the past two and half years, I learned to be a confident presenter, work as a team member, ask for help when needed, and stay true to myself. With that being said I have also seen my grades improve, writing skills improve, and people skills improve.
what area of social work can you envision yourself pursuing? Hello Wendy, in response to your question, the area of social work I can envision myself pursing will be in area of child welfare. This is because of my love for children and I believe that all children have the right to stable homes where they can be well care for and their safety from abuse and neglect is guarantee. I believe children’s welfare should be a priority for both governments and communities in which they live.
I always had a desire to help other people through difficult times. From personal experiences, I know life can me a complete mess. Thus, I have always been willing to be there for people when their worlds seem to be falling apart. However, in doing so, I have realized how often I help people by carrying their burdens instead of helping them work through their problems. Even more than before, I have realized that this is a major concern. Moreover, I think my ability to relate to people stems from experience as manager. As a manager, I learned that people are extremely different. I had to learn that people think, feel, and behave in different ways because they have been shaped by their life experiences, which can also be very different. People that I worked with shared very personal parts of their life with me. I realized that people need other people for support. Although I considered diversity (e.g., race, gender, and religion), it did not impact how I viewed the person talking to me. In other words, it did not matter if the person was gay, Muslim, atheist, or Latino because to me they were all equal. They were all people with very special stories to tell.
Working in the Social Work field has been a great experience. I have learned how to access resource as well as provide my clients with beneficial information that helps them through their particular situations. Expanding my education in social work will allow me to expand my knowledge of the field while giving me the opportunity to be a better advocate for my community. Having a Master’s in Social Work will also give me the opportunity to explore different careers such as my focus as a potential school counselor.
During my sophomore year of college, I got a chance to volunteer with two organization: the Martin Luther King Retention Program (MLK) and Inclusive Basketball program through the Social Work Organization at Shippensburg University. During my volunteering time at the MLK program, I got to mentor several students who had different nationalities and cu0ltures. All the students identified as First Generation College students. It was interesting to see different things each student did and how it differ from the others’ culture. It was interesting to learn new things from the students. This experience will help make me an effective social worker because I got a chance to work with a diverse group. I had to learn how to work with each individual on a one-on-one level so that their needs and goals were met. It was not easy because I had to adjust to some student’s cultural beliefs, however, I did learn to
At risk children and their families are an incredibly vulnerable population, even more so in their earlier years when children’s brain development is rapid. Often, children and their families who are considered at risk have experienced a hardship in their lives, possibly even a series of hardships, which have created disequilibrium. The process of reestablishing balance may be challenging for these families, especially if their support networks are limited. Therefore, having the support of a social worker may be vital to their ability to establish stability in their lives. I am honored to have been able to provide this support in my past work in the field of child welfare, and I am motivated to continue to support children and their families as I move forward in my post graduate work.
My goals are to become the best social worker that I can be. I want to be able to help people in ways that I did not think that I could reach. I want to be able to make a difference in society. I want to be able to help families, communities, groups and children in need. I want to impact the law and make it better for all parties. I want to give my community another chance at trusting the system. I want to be able to make myself, my family and my community proud. I want to be able to guide others in the right direction. I want to be able to be educated enough, knowledgeable enough to be able to do my job. I want to move up in any company that I work with. I want to be the best in the world.
My name is Justice, I recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in Sociology. I've decided to take this online course because I plan to pursue a career in Social Work. However, to be sure this is what I wanted, I thought it would be best to take a few classes before applying to grad programs. My favorite childhood memory is having movie night with my siblings and playing sports. I’m looking forward to a great semester with y’all.
Aside from wanting to leave Norfolk, I came to Virginia Commonwealth to start my journey to a professional career as a social worker. I had many goals coming into the fall semester, some of which were maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher to make the dean’s list,
Picture a mother coming home from work and not finding her children home, a child being woke up from his or her sleep asked to come with me, or a disabled military person coming home from an assignment with no resources. Things are never what they seem, especially if you are on the outside looking in. No one truly knows what goes on inside another person’s home or life unless you are there. Abuse and/or neglect come in all forms and often go unmentioned and unreported. Not having or being subject to the resources needed to make a smooth transition to an ordinary way of life can be very difficult. Throughout my life, I have had personal experiences that contributed to my passion for social work and the drive to ascertain the
