Working Long Hours Is More Complicated Than What People Believe In the article, “You Really Don’t Need To Work So Much”, author Tim Wu believes that part of the American character is to prefer work to leisure time; therefore he provides an enlightening solution through which white-collar workers can confront this damaging work system. According to Wu, the majority of American professionals like taking pride about the job they have, want to seem important in the eyes of society and worry about the income they make; therefore, they usually prolong their work hours and forget about their spare time. Nonetheless, she is motivated by her own inherited need, to fulfill her career as a journalist, which makes her work hard and long hours with the objective of succeeding at challenging tasks. Moreover, the article “Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace” portrays the concept that Amazon’s ruling principle is to focus on its own interest by pushing every employee to his/her limit without any considerations. Therefore, Wu’s recommendation is definitely unrealistic because white-collar professionals must work long hours to comply with unnecessary work, meet their collections of needs, and conform to the company’s demands and interests. Wu’s solution to cut down long work hours, by focusing on what needs to be done and leaving the choice of doing more for to those who really like it, is very unrealistic because even if workers want to leave early, they get trapped with unneeded work they have created. One example that Wu gives is the situation of the litigation system, in which “lawyers subject each other to torturous amounts of labor just because they can” (87). Due to the fact that there are no limits of “technology and a kind of professionalism,” workers charge themselves with work that has “nothing to do with real social or economic needs.” This illustrates the idea that employees need to create work so they could be crazy
