Through the process of meeting and working with my mentor I have learned a great deal about the world of electrical engineering. My father, who works in the field of electrical engineering first sparked my interest in the subject. He also made me interested in my project of building a Tesla Coil by recalling stories of rebuilding breakers and testing 400,000 volt transformers. I then watched videos of people building complex electric devices in their garage. I then met my mentor and spoke to him and my father to learn about the world of an electrical engineer. My father and I speak nearly everyday about his work, and how he has to troubleshoot issues and fix the problem that exists within the area that he is assigned to work on. Being a technician, my father can only give me support building and testing my Tesla Coil so he referred me to his colleague, Justin McGinn (a fully licenced electrical engineer), who helped me throughout the process of building a Tesla Coil. My mentor has the job that I wish to posses in the future as a general supervisor to the technical side of an electrical engineering firm. He works alongside technicians and relay workers; also he does the necessary math and science (that I am a big fan of) to work through the tasks at hand. I would have to work very hard to achieve this position though. I would need to receive schooling from a university, I would need to take tests to be certified to work on engineering projects, and I would need to work at least fifteen years in the field, and at least three with the same company to be promoted to the supervisor position that my mentor has. Knowing this now I have a newfound respect for my mentor and wish to thank him more than I already have for taking time out of his busy schedule to help myself, a simple high school student who does not pay him for his time, achieve the results of my
When I was younger, my father bought me an electromagnetic kit. I spent countless hours in my room playing with it. I had so much fun designing and putting together different configurations. It was exciting to see what worked and what did not work. It was easy for me to learn from my mistakes which prompted me to keep trying without getting frustrated. I found it very challenging and inspiring.
The aim of this assignment is to critically reflect on the experience of mentoring and assessing a student in clinical practice. As the student was on a four week placement the assessment process will be discussed incorporating the qualities of the mentor and the effect it can have on the mentor/student relationship. In turn evaluating the learning environment and teaching strategies used including learning styles, reflecting on how they were applied to help the student. Finally, the evaluation of overall performance as a mentor. For the purpose of this work a pseudonym will be used to maintain confidentiality hence the student will be known as ’A’. In this reflective essay I will provide an analysis of the counselling session I conducted and recorded. This will include a summary of the session. I will also describe the micro and advanced counselling skills utalised, as well as a critical evaluation of their effectiveness. A discussion of my application of these skills, as well as areas of possible improvement will supported by reference to relevant literature.
The Closing Bell Speaker Series “Iron Sharpens Iron”: Why Mentoring Matters So Much was presented by Forest Harper. Forest Harper is the current Chief Executive Officer and President of INROADS Inc. Harper grew up in a poor neighborhood in Fort Pierce, Florida. In high school, Harper was a star athlete in his high school’s Army ROTC program. He attended Morgan State University on a football scholarship. His plan was to become a professional football player. He suffered two knee injuries that ended his football career. He graduated from Morgan State University with a Bachelors of Arts in Social Work. After graduation, he joined the Army and served as a Lieutenant. He spent six years in the Army and rose up to the position of Captain. After the Army, Harper participated in the Executive Leadership Training program at Harvard University. Before becoming the president of INROADS, Harper worked at Pfizer for twenty-eight years. He started as a pharmaceutical sales representative and later became the Vice President of Capability Development in Worldwide Public Affairs and Policy. He was the only African American in his division. This fact inspired him to join INROADS and become a mentor to minority college student. His goal is to help get as many minority college students into the industry they choose. Harper’s own mentor is his uncle Walter Crenshaw, the oldest documented Tuskegee Airman.
The world of Engineering is so complex, yet so inspiring. Incredibly , Engineers are discovering more ingenious and inventive solution to complicated problems whilst continually maximizing efficiency. it is my inspiration to pursue a career in engineering contributing creative answers to challenging questions and improving on exciting designs with the aim to maximize the efficiency without compromising on functionality or stability.
I wanted Ms. Pillarella. She was witty, chilled and although sometimes exaggerated, very sophisticated. The minute all forty of us were told to pick a mentor, I knew everyone would start running to the teachers we all shared. So I knew at least seven people would go for Ms. Pillarella. I needed to get to her within the next half hour. Being that she was our International Baccalaureate (IB) English teacher, I knew she would assist me abundantly in writing this paper. My writing skills were mediocre, or at least they grew into mediocrity. In grade school my English Language Arts grades were never above a low three, an English teacher would be in my favor.

The aim of this essay is to discuss on how the reflection on mentorship will be undertaken, how and why the model of reflection will be used and the importance of confidentiality. I will reflect the mentorship by ensuring that the mentee during clinical practice is put at ease throughout the learning experience of four weeks (Quinn, and Hughes 2007, p. 29). Also, I will use the principle of Kolb’s learning cycle as my model of reflection because reflecting is an essential element of learning. As I am the mentor, I will follow this cycle in a clockwise direction with Jude, so she would have to reflect on the skills learnt by reviewing the whole situation (Kolb’s learning cycle 1984 in Rose and Best 2005, p.129). This would enable Jude to
Mentorship is very important in the workplace especially in the area of training and development. The mentor-protégé relationship is a much needed relationship that begins in the early career stage and this relationship involves the current or new employees and the supervisor or other colleagues that provide work-related guidance. The relationship itself is comprehensive and involves “educational, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual development” (Greenhaus,, Callanan, & Godshalk, 2010, p 211). One of the initial task of the early career the establishment of the career field which involves the gaining of the workplace competence, learn what is needed to excel in the organization, and to gain acceptance in the workplace to be recognized as the valued employee. There are many ways of achieving the above mentioned advantages in the workplace which one main method is through the use of the mentorship program.
a. My interviewing skills have come to help me know my mentor (Harriet Kulakoff) as a person because they allowed me to engage with her in conversation not only about her thoughts on healthy aging but to explore some of her interests such as playing tennis and golf or going swimming. Throughout the interview, building off the questions asked by my team members I was also able to illicit her opinion about varying issues including the use of social media and gain her thought on the younger generation and what we can do to support each other as we age as well as become more engaged with each other in light of our seeming dependence on social media. It was an enriching experience to listen to my mentor and having the right interviewing skills to ensure that both she, myself and my team members were comfortable and engaged aided in us having a successful and productive interview.

With the development of the more organic and less formal organisational structures the role of mentors has shifted with these changes. Unlike previously where mentors where seen as formal trainers who taught newcomers the processes and got them acquainted with the cultures and the systems within the organisation. Which required good interpersonal skills and a good knowledge of the activity or tasks the mentee would have to undertake, and be able to effectively relay or demonstrate the tasks or activities to the mentee. As opposed to more recently where a mentor would have to be more of an emotional counselor and demonstrate more skills than were traditionally required from
Entry 1: Finding a mentor for this project was not too difficult. Despite finding a mentor, scheduling with my mentor was actually the hardest part. The funny thing about this, is fact that my mentor is my father. I see him everyday and scheduling is still difficult. I can only imagine how tough it is for others doing this project. To find, associate and make plans with people they don’t even know. Well anyway I want to be a Police Officer. Many of the stories my father had told me and continues to tell me is very interesting. His experiences inspired me to become one myself. I was told stories about many different criminals from someone J-walking to being involved in a homicide. This job seems like the least boring job( depending where you work) someone can be apart of.
