Working in Mills The industrial revolution was rushing on at full steam and manufactured goods were at record demands. All they wanted to do was have enough money to help out their families at home, but they would never get paid enough because of the fact that they were women. Since women during those times did not have power at all, they were not able to complain or protest against these poor wages. They just had to accept the fact that they weren't being treated fairly by their employers. It was just so unfair for them because the girls worked so hard and so many hours and received hardly anything in return. Women would not receive fair wages until they were recognized by society as independent people that could make decisions for themselves and not have to be controlled by men. Not only did the women working in the mills receive poor wages, but the work that they did was extremely dangerous. The ones in the most danger were the younger kids that they had working in the mills. They used these kids to repair the machines that were broken. The kids had to do this job because they had the smallest fingers and arms so they could fit their hands into the hard to reach parts of the broken machines. This often would result in the kids losing their fingers sometimes part of their arm. When manufacturing plants started booming, they found business. Women became valuable factory workers because of their ability to complete complex tasks in the work place. Also, having willingness to labor for an inexpensive pay rate because they were in need boosted their chances of employment. In fact, employers needed them and were happy at the fact that they weren 't too costly to hire. In the document, Morals of Manufactures (1837), it states, “Many of the girls are in the factories because they have too much pride for domestic service.”(Chapter 9 Page 223) As stated before, women were looked over as far being capable of anything else other than a house wife and or mother. Some women worked for pay, as well as to prove that they were more than what society labeled them. This allowed women to make their own money and not be forced to completely live off their husbands. Also, this gave women a freedom and sensibility to become more independent.
They were also treated less than men and sometimes to this day we see women being treated discriminated. For example on page 68 Jane was talking to her father about how she wanted to go to college. “‘A college for women,’” Jane said hastily “‘They have lots of them now - Vassar,Smith, Barnard…’” Father was scowling and shaking his head “‘Why,that’s preposterous,’” he said. “‘Almost as preposterous as women wanting to vote.’” Well. So that was what he thought of women’s rights. A year ago ,month ago, maybe even a day ago, it wouldn’t have mattered”. Jane’s father thought this because men believed women were inferior. Education for women was uncommon, mainly because women were they ones that had to take care of the home and kids, and men would get an education. On page 150 another example of how women fought and had strikes for women’s suffrage. If a child were to work at the mill they would start out as young as ten years old. Most of the children that did work at the mill would got to school for about 6 hours then they would go to work for 7 or so hours. Also many of the women that did work at the mill their husbands had died so they had to provide for their children and they typically had more than two children. It was very rough at the mill, the air was filled with fumes and lint and it would get stuck in the worker's lungs and they would get really sick. These women worked on the Southern plantations all day without relief. They not only worked in the fields, but also in the house with their masters. Though people thought slavery was a sin, as Mrs. A did, women could not challenge slavery politically because there was a great lack of decorum in women getting involved with politics, thus African American women continued to work for free (Doc. C). Even though this was a setback, women in the workforce pushed forward and strived to become equal. As women continued to chase their equality in the workforce, they petitioned the Massachusetts legislature to try and equal themselves with men (Doc. I). In the mid-1800s lots of things were being made by machine. For example: clothing, shoes, watches, guns, and farming machines were made. In 1840 the workday was 11 ½ hours. The workers were very tired and they most likely would have accidents. Workers and even children were hurt a lot by the machines. In the summer they were hot and in the winter they were cold, because there was not air conditioning or a heater in the factories. There were no laws to help the working conditions, and even to protect them. The owners didn't care about the workers, they cared about the money. The US did not give any women the economic and political rights they should have had. Lots of women in 1815 taught school, were mill girls, or were just mothers taking care of children and the household jobs. They were doing hard work and were making progress with their rights. But, even though women had more rights and less restrictions than the immigrants, they still didn’t have all of the rights that they deserved. In Document A, the majority of the 10,000 workers were young, unmarried women from farm families. The women took on a significant role in the mills; tending the spinning machine and producing cotton textiles. The owners of the mills offered housing and education to increase the interest for women to work. In document C, Sally Rice, a young woman from Vermont, went to look for her own job away from the farm her family owned. She found work as a domestic servant in New York, and then found another job weaving in a cotton mill in Blackstone Valley. She wished to earn her own money and become more independent. In her letters to her family, she describes how great her work is. The Industrial Revolution started in the eighteenth century in Britain. There were innovative advances in the society that led to the faster production of goods. Prior to this even started, agriculturists needed to leave their property and urbanize to the urban areas. The main accessible occupation that required job was the frightening industrial facilities. These factories changed the lives of these agriculturalists by making them work numerous hours.
Women and children were able to join the work force, but for little pay and long hours. Many were face with poor work conditions, hazardous health issues and short lunch breaks. The women wanted to get as much done as they possibly could because they were paid by the piece, and in their rush, their fingers would get caught in the machines. Women should be able to vote, control their own property and income, and they should have access to higher education and professional jobs. Women also had many roles in society. Women had very important parts in jobs as they took up more responsibilities. Girls, young ladies, and women of all ages were working harder to bring home income. Most women thought the pay and the conditions were unfair. These arguments grew as women fought more and more for social equality.
