ASPCA was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh. ASPCA is a charity that helps prevent cruelty to animals. There headquarters are in New York City. ASPCA was created because Henry Bergh believed that animal cruelty was a terrible thing and it should be eliminated. I quote Henry Bergh, “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States”. Basically, what he is saying, is that the goal of ASPCA is to protect animals from harsh people, homes, and their health(ASPCA).

To be more specific, animals get abused or abandoned every 10 seconds which shouldn't be happening. Overall about 7.6 million animals go into shelters nationwide and out of those only 3-4 million of them get adopted every year. Not only do 2.7 million dogs and cats get killed every year because the shelters get too full and there aren’t enough homes to adopt them but in high kill shelters animals get killed if they aren't adopted in a certain amount of time. Around easter time people buy chicks and rabbits, and often abandon them, not realizing they still need care and they also will dye these animals different colors thinking it will do them no harm but in reality it does. That is why in some states that is illegal. Abandoning animals in many states is a crime. 1 out of every 10 dogs get a home they will always live in which means that most dogs do not get a home that they will always live in and less than 20% of cats and 15-20% of dogs get reunited with their owner after they are lost. Homeless animals outnumber humans 5-1 which are a lot. One way to help animals is by adopting abused or abandoned animals. People can also donate to charities that help abandoned animals. Many animals go to shelters because they get left behind by their owners or they were found on the streets. Most pets that are stray were kept indoors. In an article “The Last Meow” published in The New Yorker in 2003 the author Burkhard Bilger states “Americans now spend $19 billion a year on veterinary care for their pets, up from $11 billion just seven years ago. Add to that the cost of pet food and other supplies, and the number rises to $47 billion, nearly three times as much as the federal government spends on welfare grants” (Bilger, part 7, paragraph 48) Bilger claims “clearly our love affair with animals has gotten out of control”(Bilger, part 8, paragraph 49). It is a sad state of affairs that Americans spend 15 billion on welfare in this country, and some squabble over money spent on helpless loving animals owned by hard working loving Americans.. The truth about PETA, is that they do not want all animals to roam free. They want the population of dogs and cats to be reduced through spaying and neutering. Every day in the United States, approximately 10,000 people and 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. There will never be enough homes for all of these animals, and as a result millions are killed by animal control or die by themselves every year. If people would adopt their pets from a rescue or shelter, and not buy from pet stores or breeders, many lives would be saved and a lot of misery would be averted. Also, you end up with a great animal.

Have you ever seen the ASPCA commercials where they show pictures of abused and neglected animals while the Sarah McLachlan song “In the Arms of an Angel” plays in the background? It is heart wrenching to watch and I always want to help those poor, defenseless animals. I took this opportunity to volunteer at the Town and Country Animal Shelter; a non-profit, no-kill shelter run entirely by volunteers serving eastern Nebraska and beyond. They are dedicated to providing a safe and caring living facility for pets in need until a loving home can be found, as well as helpful information for those wishing to rehome or adopt an animal. I chose this organization because they are a no kill shelter and they take in animals of all different sorts.

Hello everyone, my name is Katrina Clark. So, imagine one day you were ripped away from your family and from your home with nowhere to go, in the street, cold, starving, and have absolutely no idea where your next meal is going to come from. Well, for over 7 million animals each year that is the sad reality. I personally own around ten cats that were either from a shelter or on the street starving. I also own two dogs that I have found on the road that had been dumped and left to die. My experience with adopting these animals has truly opened my eyes to how many animals are truly in need of homes. All of these animals are sweet blessings that I wouldn’t trade for the world. Have you ever been watching tv and the ASPCA commercial comes on, you know the one that has the song “Arms of an Angle.” The commercial makes you feel super sad for the poor animals that have been abused and victimized because of cruel behavior. They ask you to donate money to help these animals recover. What if when these animals do recover they were turned into Service animals. This is a matter of great concern in our community because we could help get most, if not all the animals adopted into a loving home. Well, luckily, there are shelters in different places that help animals that aren’t able to take care of themselves. Did you know that every year 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters in U.S.? If you think that figure was huge, now imagine around 1.5 million of them are being euthanized every year because the shelter doesn’t have enough money or volunteers (ASPCA) to take care of them. However, this number can be significantly reduced if we start to make a change. With my speech, I would like to persuade you to from now on look for pets in a shelter instead of a pet store. Every day in the United States animals are killed because of neglect from humans. Many of these animals find refuge in shelters. Some of these shelters, however, are not suitable for animals. The U.S. government has proved itself unworthy of funding animal shelters. Many true loving, nonprofit organizations exist that can and should properly fund animal shelters in the United States. The funding for animal shelters is either done by the insufficient government or by the organizations formed by people, some affiliated with the No Kill philosophy. Volunteer organizations are the rightful supporters of the neglected animals and when the No Kill philosophy reaches every shelter in the U.S. all unnecessary killing of animals will be eliminated.

In the U.S alone, there are over one point five million nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations, also known as charities, are organizations set up to provide help and raise money for those in need. An example of a nationwide charity would be the Humane Society. The Humane Society impacts the lives of animals and humans all over the world, by protecting them from cruelty and mistreatment.

Scared, hungary, alone, and hurt. Everyday thousands of animals are abandoned and left to die. Everybody has at least been informed on this subject because of ASPCA, Animal Core, and Animal Rescue commercials that leave the heart hurting. Some people aren’t aware that some of these commercials do not actually help animals. In fact some of these organizations donate straight to the federal government. Most people know that the federal government has a debt of 17.8 trillion dollars, so why would people think that the government would willingly forfeit a large sum of money to help animals (Lang). It is better to donate directly to a local animal shelter than to donate to a commercial 1-800 number.
