What Were the Underlying Causes of World War 1? There are many deep causes about the underlying of World War 1. Ever wonder what other people thought in their minds when war broke out or when the war was going to begin? What the people back then felt? In this essay, that I wrote, you will see what documents that have been written by various people. “Would not the end of war be the end of humanity? War itself is life. Nothing exists in nature, is born, grows or multiplies except by combat. We must eat and be eaten so that the world may live. It is only warlike nations which have prepared; a nation dies as soon as it disarms. War is the school of discipline, sacrifice and courage.” This was written by Emile Zola. She was a French writer in James Joll. Other people may think she meant something else because everyone has their own thoughts on things, but to me this quote states “The war was like a nightmare that came true. As you read it try to catch what they’re trying to say. This poem is one that you have to look beyond the words written in the script. Where you have to feel what they felt. This poem is called “Rule Britannia.” When Britain first at Heaven’s command. Arose from out the azure main; this was the charter of the land, and guardian angels sang this strain; ‘Rule britannia! Britannia, rule the waves: Britons never will be slaves. The nation not so blest as thee, shall in their turns of tyrants fall; while thou shalt flourish great and free, the dread and envy of them all. Rule britannia! Britannia, rule the waves: Britons never will be slaves.” Notice that the word Britannia has been repeated for a numerous amount of times. ‘BRITANNIA” is the old Roman for England and Wales. Their tone shows that they will fight to be free and not to be slaves to others. They will fight for their freedom until the last human dies
