Getting Handsy: Canadian Anti-Axis Power Attitude During World War II World War II began a long time before war was actually declared on the Axis Powers. In, 1921, Adolf Hitler became the leader of the National Social Party, or Nazi Party. After a series of escalating events, seventeen years later, Hitler was the leader of Germany and declared Anschluss (or union), which led to more invasions of neighboring European countries. Once Germany invaded Poland, in September of 1939, Britain, France, and Canada decided enough was enough and declared war (World War II, 2012). Canada declared war on Germany on September 10, 1939. They sent troops right away to start the Battle of the Atlantic. They fought and sent troops overseas, and by the year of 1942, when “Hands Off!” was drawn, Canada had five divisions overseas (Second World War, 2012). Propaganda posters were used in all of the countries during World War II to promote the war and their troops. The artists’ used pathos, ethos, logos, colors, and symbolism to get across the agenda that the government wanted the citizens to believe. They used propaganda to boost the morale of citizens, to promote production, and to urge the citizens to buy bonds. Gordon K. Odell was a famous Canadian propaganda poster artist during the World War II period. He was …show more content…
Odell achieves this portrayal by drawing the German swastika and Japanese symbol on the two hands. This makes it clear that he means the hands to represent the German and Japanese forces. The hands are also drawn reaching out towards the woman and child, making it clear that they are trying to get a hold of them. This image is expressing that the German and Japanese forces are a clear threat towards Canadian citizens, especially women and
World War II and Propaganda Posters Propaganda during World War II was escalated to perhaps the greatest heights in history. Propaganda is used to manipulate information to influence public opinion, rather than merely communicate the facts about something. The American government used propaganda posters to persuade people to conserve material needed by soldiers, to discourage gossip about information heard about the war effort, and to invest in war bonds. Other posters enforced the need for mass production of war materials and some were directed at women to become part of the workforce because of the depleting number of men left for combat. Firstly, war bonds were debt
In the year 1933, six years before World War II began, the Nazi party came to power in Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. At this point, the German nation was in an
The Posters that were used during World War II targeted women, Mechanics, and Hard working men. They targeted different types of people in order to get these people join and fight for America. By targeting these people it helped because these people to join in the fight. It targeting men who worked in factories, women who were nurses and doctors, and young mechanics who knew the inside and outside of cars. Because they targeted a specific audience it caused many more people to join the air force, army, and the air force. This was a way for the government to get more troops and more doctors.
World War Two started in 1939 and lasted until 1945. It was triggered when Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Germany at that time, took over Poland, a country that was supported by French and British who warned him not to. France and Great Britain then declared war with Germany and its allies on September 3, 1939 (Perry 688). At that time, the
World War Two, was a war that began in 1939 and ended in 1945. On September the 1st 1939, Britain and France declared war on Germany, following Germany’s invasion of Poland. Although Germany’s invasion triggered the war, the Treaty of Versailles also had a significant impact on the beginning of World War Two. In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was created to bring peace to Europe after World War One. Due to the main terms of the Treaty, Germany had to accept the blame for starting WWI, pay for the damage caused in the war and some of their land was taken away. As this left the people of Germany unhappy, a powerful, infamous man named Adolf Hitler was voted in as Chancellor. He lead Germany into combat and gained help from his personal body
Prior to World War I, posters were already a mature advertising tool. They were also valued and collected as art. Thus, propaganda posters could depend on viewers who were familiar with its visual elements (using a traditional tool to articulate something new).
During the time this painting was created World War II was happening and the United States treasury needed to raise billions of dollars of War Bonds in order to help the government with the war effort, this painting clearly represents the American Culture and the huge help of artists all over America, just like Abraham Rattner, that helped encourage people support of World War II by creating creative paintings such as this one that say “buy bonds.”
Propaganda posters were a key tool used in the spread of government rhetoric during the second world war. The purpose of this poster was to influence women to join the army and appeal to their inner feeling of pride. The historical context of this poster depicts women as being powerful fighters who are fully capable of joining the military and supporting the war effort. The image depicts women as having the strength and spirit of their “inner warrior”. The title, “l’inspiration des femmes du Canada” is displayed prominently on the image and suggests that, by joining the army, the women of Canada were following in the footsteps of every female hero before them. However, the poster also glamorizes the reality of war and further reinforces women’s

World War II started on September 1st, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. Before this happened Adolf Hitler wanted to gain power. I want to explore on the graphic aspects in wartime. How creativity was accentuated so many trendsetting depending on the situation, because of the need of the human being express itself. Throughout history created posters that were marking generations. How graphic design evolved right through these wars. I want to write about the great impact that graphic design had in the great wars of history.
World War Two began in 1939 and it when for six year, World War Two lasted until both the Germans and the Japanese had surrendered in 1945, which was six years after it began. It began in September 1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany after Germany had invaded Poland. January 1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and he immediately he secretly built up Germany 's army and weapons. In 1934 he made the size of the army bigger and he began to build warships and he created a German air force. Britain and France were aware of Germany preparing for war but they were concerned about the rise of Communism and they thought that if Germany was stronger, it might prevent the spread of Communism. In 1936 German troops entered Rhineland, they weren 't very strong at this point and they couldn 't of been defeated easily by France or England but neither of them were prepared for war. Germany 's next step was to take back the land that was originally theirs and in March 1938 German troops moved into Austria, the Austrian leader was forced to hold a vote to see if Austria wanted to be apart of Germany. The voting results shows that were fixed and 99% of people wanted to be in union with Germany. Austria looked for help from France and Britain and hitter promised that it was the last of Germany spreading because he didn 't want war. Hitler lied and in March 1939 invaded Czechoslovakia. Despite the Czechoslovakian government asking for help either
