Nationalism in Austria has been a journey through wars and development of individuality from Germany. The German culture has been part of Austria’s history and influence. After World War I, remaining part of the Austrian- Hungarian empire, multiethinic and multilinguistic, considered themselves ‘Germans’ and ‘second German state’ (Solsten, McClave, & Keefe, 1994, p. 79). However, Austria was forbidden to unify with Germany. The mindset of the Austrian psyche would consider being German, but also a state that no one wanted after World War I.
