What led to WW1? Many things occurred that led to WW1. Things like assassinations, isolation, and imperialism. These things changed the US in more ways than one. One thing that led to WW1 was the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Gavrilo Princip. This was a major reason of why the war started. Austria-Hungary was very angry at Serbia for doing this. Imperialism means to expand on the other countries that are weaker. It can be seen as a double-edged sword because Europe with military/naval bases, resources, and foreign markets to buy European goods, and the competition led to a ‘winner-take-all’ which put country against country for power.
