World War I: What Led To WWI?

Though most historians consider the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary the most immediate cause of WWI, or the rise of Germany to be the main cause since they signed the Versailles Treaty (Doc 4), many agree that the war was not caused by just one thing. Instead, it was caused by a concept instead of specific people or countries. It seemed that everyone, during this time period, had started to increase their military power and defense systems. Therefore, World War I was caused by two things: the fear these countries had of losing their power, and the big toll that European Imperialism took international relations.

Britain, France, Germany and other nations competed for colonial gains in Africa. Britain and Germany competed industrially. Then, Germany industrialized quickly and the British were threatened by this. This caused them to hate Germany, then France and Britain eventually forms an alliance and goes at it with Germany. Document 4 states, “The allied and associated governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage”. The final cause of WW1 was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary which started the war immediately. After the assassination the Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. once Russia heard that Serbia was at war, they also had to go to war which leads Germany declaring war on Serbia. There were many causes that contributed to World War I like: Imperialism, Militarism, and Alliances. Europeans thought they could make the world their oyster and take over any areas they pleased. Most countries did not appreciate their land being taken from them. For example, Serbia wanted independence from their mother country Austria-Hungary, so a nationalist group called the Black Hand, decided to assassinate the Archduke. If Serbia didn’t assassinate the Archduke of Austria-Hungary the war probably wouldn't have happened at all. World war 1 has been a major impact on the world. It was a war in which the casualty was very high for some European countries. New technology was used throughout the war by each of the European countries. But what was the cause of the war? I believe that the causes of World War 1 were the alliance system militarism and imperialism.

There was a lot of reasons World War 1 commenced imperialism, assassination, nationalism, alliances, and militarism are a few of WW1’s causes. On June 28th, 1914 archduke of Austria-Hungary and his wife were on their way home from an event when their driver took a wrong turn and Blackhand member Gavrilo Princip just happened to be in the alleyway where they stopped to turn around. Gavrilo Princip quickly pulled out his gun and shot both Archduke and his wife. This Assassination caused Serbia and Austria-Hungary to declare war which lead to WW1. Militarism is the belief or desire of a government of people that I country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests. Militarism denoted a rise in military expenditure, an increase in military and naval forces, more influence of the military men upon the policies of the civilian government, and a preference for force as a solution to problems. This caused the war because it built up nations armies and when you have a huge army that's good you use it. Imperialism is a policy of extending another country‘s power and influence through colonization, and use of military force to create empires they exploited weaker countries. This policy of one nation dominating other countries or regions caused the war because countries wanted to be huge empires like Great Britain. World War 1 was triggered through the German nation wanting to expand their territory. The German nation was in direct competition with France and Britain who held larger areas of land and would later become Germany’s direct enemy. Conflict and tension between Austria, Hungry and an attack on Serbia with continued fighting in the Balkans was also a contributing factor to World War. 1. Politically WW1 lead to many new geographical changes on the globe countries gained and lost territories, socially there were 10 million soldiers dead, 20 million wounded and 40 million killed by Spanish influenza.

World War 1 was very tragic, there were many deaths and many changes. What was the cause of WW1? You might wonder. The four main causes of World War 1 are nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances. They had a very positive attitude in going into the war. The soldiers were 19-20 years old. They were very well educated and were from middle class. This was was the first war in which women were allowed to fight.

WW1 actually began as a conflict within Europe, then it slowly progressed and became a world war. Tension began growing within the European countries caused by many different things. Such as, militarism, imperialism, alliances, and nationalism. Each one of these had an effect on reason why the war was started. Imperialism is viewed as one of the main reasons why the war starts. It started a competetions among the nations. The intense competetions grew so much that the nation’s seeked help by the strongest and best countries. Although some people will also say that nationalism was a main influence to cause the war. For the main reason that it had caused economic and territory issue through Europe, growing just as tension as imperialism. Militarism and alliances had put drastic effects on the war but not believe to start it. Militarism was a race to build up armies during nationalism. Each nation was terrified that another country would try to attack them, so built up their armies in defense.

What one thing do you think caused WW1? There in fact were many causes of WW1. One of the causes was imperialism. There was jealousy between the countries because some had more colonies then others. The major countries did not trust each other or get along. They were worried about the build up of each others army. Each country had great pride and nationalism. By 1914 all major countries had taken sides against one another and formed alliances. The immediate cause of WW1 was the assignation of the heir to Austria-Hungary’s throne.

WW1 was the result of several factors such as Imperialism, Nationalism and Militarism between World Alliances of that time period.The two sides who ended up facing each other in this war because of those factors were the: Allies - United Kingdom, Russia, France, USA and Italy, while the Central Power included Ottoman Empire, Austro Hungary and Germany. At time in history most European nations already had colonies and as the years went by, the land which was still independent was fought over fiercely. Italy and Germany were new world powers and both countries wanted to expand their boundaries. England was focused on maintaining it’s already diminishing empire while Russia and Austro-Hungary were busy dividing the Balkans through force and politics. Each nation wanted to look and be stronger as a nation. Imperialism - the hunt for more land, lead to Militarism and Nationalism which helped create the war. These three factors gave birth to WW1 and played a big role in the war.

A naval arms race between Britain and Germany created a bigger rivalry. This led to a buildup of weapons and created a good reason for war. Lastly, imperialism was also a big conflict that helped the start of World War 1. Imperialism is when a country colonize into other territories to increase their power and wealth.

There were multiple reasons that led to World War 1. This affected the US in many ways. One thing that led to World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, done by a Serbian terrorist. This upset Austria-Hungary and this is why they wanted to go to war with Serbia. Because of friendship between them and their allies,their partnerships went to join war with them. One way that World War 1 impacted the US was through the Great Migration.

The second cause of World War 1 is the acronym M.A.I.N., it stands for Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism. That acronym is very important in trying to understand what happened during World War 1. First is Militarism, the first is militarism because every country wanted to prove how big and powerful they are and by increasing their military size and power it helped show that. Second is Alliances, it is alliances because in this scenario the more friends the better. Reason is when you have a rival country the more bigger and more powerful friends you have the better leading to someone less likely to attack you. But the system of alliances also led to the beginning of World War One. Because most of Europe got divided into either The Central Powers or the Allied powers. The Central Powers consisted of the countries Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The Allied powers consisted Great Britain, France, Russia, and the United States(pg.10 of WW1). With the rise of industrialism countries needed new markets. Many historians have different ideas on the cause of World War I, ranging from Germany invading Belgium to go to France, mutual defense alliances, or nationalism. Otto Von Bismarck was a famous statesman in the late 1800 and had predicted a main reason for the start of World War I. He had said, a European War would start from “some damned foolish thing in the Balkans”, which he stated 20 years before the war had occurred.
