World War II : The Last War That Got Full American Support

America having war on both sides and a fear of another deadly continuation of WWI, which some people still felt the effects of, did not want to get involved. However, President Franklin Roosevelt made sure that the United States prepared to defend our country or going to all-out war. To become prepared, the U.S. enlarged the military, strengthened certain allies such as Great Britain, and most importantly converted civilian industries to produce armaments and other war material needed (Tassava, 3). During the 1930’s, there was a “peace time” war draft, men ages 21-30 were selected into protecting the U.S. and their colonized countries. Men of the Greatest Generation were barely coming upon the age for the draft and enlistments for the military. President Roosevelt proclaimed, “This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny” (Brokaw). Soon the Greatest Generation would have its moment to shine.

The military draft has been a controversial topic for many years in American society. The idea of a military draft has drastically changed between World War II and the Vietnam War. During the times of World War II, military service and draft was widely accepted by many Americans. During the World War II era, citizens felt that they had an “unlimited liability to perform military service when required by the state” (James 2). But as time progressed, military service and draft in the Vietnam War, constructed many doubts amongst many Americans. The U.S. draft is controversial between many Americans opinions because of its unfairness.

Throughout American history the U.S has tried to stay out of national disputes but sometimes it is necessary for them to take action. In all the wars ever fought in the world only two have been fought on U.S soil and one of the wars was between our own country(Civil War).

They came, unwarned. On the 7th of December 1941, the Japanese executed a full-fledged attack on Pearl Harbor. They mercilessly created havoc, with attacks that caused the sinking of eighteen American ships, as well as 170 aircrafts. The casualties were dreadful, with 1,177 of those lost lives had been of the crewmen. The very next day, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan, and thus the United States’ involvement of World War II. Americans of every state were absolutely enraged and bent on their will for vengeance against the Asian country. Within the shadows of galvanized America, Robert Oppenheimer had set his infamous Manhattan Project into action. This project was so disclosed that only a limited number of men truly knew of its purpose. The clandestine project held prior securities to the point in which famous scientists had to use codenames in order to visit Los Alamos, even wives were kept in the dark, and only key scientists could bring their wives along with them. (Source D) This project had been the discreet creation of the Atomic Bombs. Time and time again, this topic had never really dissipated, its controversial who, what and whys prompting generations to debate its palpable purpose. Was the aim really focused for the “good of all?” Was it for America’s self-preservation and wish to promptly put an end to all of the suffering? Many Americans to this day still believe and argue for the usefulness of the atomic bombings, that the droppings were justified.

Undoubtedly, humanity and modern civilization would have never reached their current form with the research. Research is the key element behind any type of evolution and progress. Contemporary, broadly established theories, varying from the understanding of the universe to the revelation of human evolution, are the result of valuable innovations in different fields of science and technology. Every day life has been simplified due to the constant advance of knowledge and discoveries. However, none of this would be possible without constant research. In his book The Best War Ever: America and World War II, Michael Adams tries to dissolve the many misconceptions of World War II. As the title of the book implies, The United States left the war with a great optimistic view of the these “glorious” five years. The United States as a population had been tricked into believing in the, at times, fabricated conditions of its history that had been presented to people as some beautiful stories and myths where nations are viewed as being first-rate in union and morality. These so-called myths were created out of several factors. Because of Hollywood, the vast amounts of government propaganda, and far-reaching economic prosperity, Americans were, for the most part, hidden from the real truth of The Second World War. In this period of time, even, the generation of the Second World War is seen as being top-notch in morality and unity. There was a popular misconception held that there were no problems in terms of ethnicity or gender; it seemed that families were living contented lives and children excelled in school and read all kinds of books (115).

The United States of America has always been a country based on the protection of its citizens’ freedom. Due to this long-held principle, which comprises the country’s core values, the concept of universal national service (more commonly known as the draft) is quite controversial. Advocates for the draft argue that the drafting of eligible Americans is necessary to preserve a strong military that is capable of protecting the U.S. from possible attacks, as well as instilling a sense of national pride in its youth. While the draft could potentially strengthen the military in theory, the draft could also be quite counterintuitive in reality. The majority of the history of the United States during the 1940’s was plagued by World War II. However, before the U.S. entered the war, the first antibiotic penicillin was successfully used which revolutionized the medical field and WWII. Also, the U.S. Congress approved the first peacetime draft for the Army. On November 5, 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president for his third term. This was the first time in U.S. history that a president had been elected for three terms.

December 7, 1941 marked an important date for the American involvement in World War II. “The attacking planes came in two waves; the first hit its target at 7:53 AM, the second at 8:55” (eyewitnesstohistory). It was the day that the United States declared war against Japan and got involved in World War II after Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor. “Behind them they left chaos, 2,403 dead, 188 destroyed planes and a crippled Pacific Fleet that included 8 damaged or destroyed battleships” (eyewitnesstohistory). After so many deaths and millions in loss of planes and ships the United States decided to get involved in World War II. The United States would join the Allies which were Great Britain, USSR and France. This day changed the nation completely, it changed the war and it would show later on how the United States was the was the dominant nation during World War II. From this day on the United States tried to make sure that the Japanese were not able to get any information about what the United States wanted to do. Many of the Japanese Americans that lived in California, Oregon and Washington found their lives had changed after President Roosevelt issued the Executive order no. 9066 which order over 110,000 Japanese Americans to live in detention camps (Teacher Scholastic). Is it possible to know what Americans thought of World War II, if they believed that the war was a just war or whether they did not agree for what the United States was fighting for? The historian Studs Terkel believes he knows this answer and that Americans saw themselves as liberators of an oppressed world fighting for the just war which can be concluded from his famous volume, The Good War. Of course one person’s beliefs should not be believed as easily just by reading a book. A person should base their opinions on something much more analytical than that. In order to decide whether some Americans actually thought that World War II was a just war, a thorough analysis should be done of American life looking at all the facts found. Beginning with American experience before the war then analyzing the experience of the war and the home-front itself and finally ending with the analysis of America after World War II a conclusion can be made regarding the American point of view.

Throughout human history, war has permeated the lives of billions of people. From early conflicts such as conquests to control vast swaths of land by Alexander the Great and Cyrus the Great to modern, global wars such as the World Wars, the concept of war has been at the forefront of humanity’s mind for centuries. However, in recent years, opposition to war and lack of participation in the military has become a common theme in many countries, including the United States. To help alleviate the troubles caused by lack of participation, the United States instituted a law allowing for the conscription of its citizens. Conscription, which can also be referred to as a draft, is defined as the compulsory drafting of citizens into military service (What). The Draft has been utilized throughout US History in a couple of prominent wars; however, opposition has manifested against the Vietnam War and the draft, rightfully stemming from ethical opposition to the war and hatred for what the war and the draft stood for.
