World War One: The Murder Of The Austrian Archduke

World War I was also known as the Great War, or the War to End All Wars. This war took place from 1914 to 1918. World War I was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28th, 1914, although a war was inevitable due to the tensions between European countries. The three main causes of World War I were nationalism, militarism, and alliances. Nationalism initiated war because citizens felt that it was their duty to defend their country’s honor.

In the end, no one was singing. World War 1 lasted from 1914 to 1918. It was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Eventually, armies all across Europe were fighting and resulted in over 10 million deaths. Three underlying causes of World War 1 were alliances, militarism, and imperialism.

World War 1 was caused by long term tensions between European nations. This followed the unsuccessful attempt of France trying to achieve dominance in Europe. However on the 28th June 1914 there was an assassination of the Austrian heir- Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s, in his visit in Sara Jevo, Serbia. (Dugan 2000) Figure 2 shows an artist’s illustration of the Heir, his wife and the assassin during the attack. This resulted in Austria declaring war on Serbia. Russia soon pledged an alliance with Serbia, this was not long after Germany declared war on Russia. (Dugan 2000)

The World War One started in 1914 and ended in 1918 and occurred in Europe. The main areas it occurred in was Belgium and the Western Front. People involved were the German, Australians, New Zealanders and British people. World War 1 was mostly fought on the Western Front. Western Front started being used on the 17 August 1914 to the 3rd ofMarch 1918. Germany originally started the Western Front to gain ground against the enemies. German Empire, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire all fought together against the Russian Empire, Russian Republic, Romania, Belgium, British Empire. They also fought again Soviet Russia.

Also the alliance system caused many problems in the long run of the war. It was believed that the fighting would be over quickly but sadly the war lasted 4 years (from August 1st, 1914 to November 11th, 1918. It soon became clear that the fighting would continue for a long time and that it would result in massive casualties. Although the United States attempted to avoid involvement in the war. Finally by 1917 they joined the Allied Powers.

World War 1 started in July 28, 1914. WWI was the conflict in which a plethora of countries around Europe and America took part in. The US played a big role in the efforts to win the war even if it was near the end. Millions of both civilians and soldiers died in the war and cross fire. World War 1 was the first major conflict at a global scale.

There were over a hundred nations involved not only from Europe, but from Asia, Africa, Central America, North America and many Island nations. There were millions of casualties fighting in slow moving trench warfare , and many battles were also fought at sea.

In the summer of 1914 a shot rang out amongst the crowd. This shot was a bullet aimed for the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Who knew when Garvilo Princip shot the gun that was aimed towards the Archduke that he would change the course of history. Therefore, he set in motion a change of events that started World War I. Nevertheless, the course of the world had changed, the start of one of the most destructive times in the world was about to begin. How could this had been stopped? I will explain that in the next few paragraphs.

World War 1 was a historical period in which the UK, France and the Russian Empire (known as the Triple Entente) went to war with Germany and Austria-Hungry. It lasted for 4 years spanning from July 29th, 1914 to November 11th, 1918. There was much miscommunication between nations, which in turn was cause for much bloodshed as it led to about 16 million deaths in total. Many historians note this War as the deadliest in world history. As the war progressed, many other nations started joining in and taking sides. Soon enough the war would spread over the world. The wars cause is believed to be due to the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Because of this, Austria- Hungry declared war on Serbia. One would lead to the other and we were left with a mess of each nation at war with each other, making up the World War.

World War I took place in the year of 1914 till the year of 1919. The war went on for 4 years. What triggered the start of World War I was the assassination of Australia’s archduke, Francis Ferdinand. The Black Hand group did not want Archduke Francis to be ruler of their land. Francis’ assassin led Europe’s stability to collapse. Europe desired to build empires and form new alliances. The Allies were the victors. There is an estimation of 10 million military soldiers that died and 7 million civilian deaths. 21 million were wounded and nearly 8 million either went missing or were imprisoned.
