Abstract
Would Oxytocin Alter Jealousy?
As time, people, and life has evolved, one thing tends to remain the same, jealousy. Jealousy is better known to be a “state that is aroused by a perceived threat to a valued relationship or position and motivates behavior aimed to countering the threat” (Daly, Wilson, & Weghorst, 1982, p.11) Males and females of all species become jealous at certain points in life if they feel that their relationship or role is being threatened. According to Daly et al. (1982), male’s jealousy has highly developed into sexual jealousy because of competition with other males. Buss, Larsen, Westen, & Semmelroth performed two studies which measured jealousy in males and females in factors of sexual and emotional infidelity. In the research conducted by Buss et al. (1992), Study 1 measured distress from 202 undergraduate students as they were asked to answer which

According to the results, males become more jealous over sexual infidelity rather than emotional infidelity and there is an important element that triggers the rise of their jealousy (Buss et al., 1992). A main component that contributes greatly at the increase of male jealousy is paternity uncertainty (Buss, Larsen, Westen, & Semmelroth, pg. 205). When males underestimate the faithfulness of the female, they begin to have doubts in the paternity of the children he is raising. Males are territorial. They do not like to share what is theirs, therefore if a woman and a child are his, he will not let another man sleep with his woman or let another man raise his child. Even though men are territorial towards their women and children, if they do not release oxytocin for that woman, his sexual urge may be sought elsewhere. This is when infidelity
The higher the level of insecurity, the more people are prone to jealousy. Often times in marriage, people are accustomed to believing the silliest things and before they know it, their relationship is ruined. Individuals chose to worry about the fear of being split apart instead of focusing on current ecstasy. In the play, Othello, by William Shakespeare, the main character falls into a state of pure rage and jealousy. This eventually controls and destroys his initial nobility while hurting people along the way. Through evil vengeance and false inevitability, the author significantly conveys Othello’s naivety and displays how jealousy easily corrupts people’s minds.
Jealousy can be defined as the resentment of a person or individual due to their successes or advantages. As human beings we are inherently created with this quality, but it is when we choose to indulge it, that it results in negative consequences. Jealousy is an extremely strong emotion, often beyond our control. In the short stories “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, the two authors clearly portray the negative effects that jealousy can have on one’s life.
There are many different emotions like sadness, happiness, and joyfulness just to name a few that people can experience. One of the most powerful and sometimes dangerous emotions is Jealousy. Jealousy is a powerful emotion that most people experience at some point in their life. However, not everyone is affected in the same way. Some people are filled with insecurity. While others are filled with fear. Most people experience anger. In William Shakespeare’s Othello the audience learns through the characterization of Othello and Iago, the symbolism of the handkerchief, and through Othello denying that he is jealous we learn that jealousy can make people behave irrationally in certain circumstances.
Thesis statement: The combination of vanity and rage is the catalyst to tragedy in modern relationships.

Jealousy, it is one of the most complex human emotions. Everyone experiences jealousy, but each person reacts upon it differently. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene is envious toward his lifelong friend Finny. The article “Jealousy: Love’s Destroyer” by Hara Marano, jealousy is perceived as a survival instrument. The video “Ode to Envy” by Parul Sehgal, jealousy can be seen as natural. All three sources identify how each person acts differently in a situation that revolves around envy. In the novel A Separate Piece, by John Knowles, the article “Jealousy: Love’s Destroyer”, by Hara Estroff Marano, and the video “Ode to Envy”, by Parul Sehgal, each author shows that jealousy causes each individual to react differently.
In everyday life jealousy occurs over an outfit, how you look, or a skill someone is really good at, and for some people jealousy will make them do negative things--things they would otherwise not do. In Ray Bradbury’s, Kij Johnson’s, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s short stories they all represent jealousy throughout their stories. In “All Summer In a Day”, the children are jealous over Margot seeing and remembering the sun, were as they can’t remember. In “Ponies”, it talks about how Barbara is jealous of TheOtherGirls, and will do anything to fit in with them. In “Harrison Bergeron”, the society is based over the past years of people being “not equal”, so the Handicapper General made everyone equal so there would not be many outburst, but Harrison decides to rebel. In “All Summer In a Day”, “Ponies”, and “Harrison Bergeron” we learn that jealousy can make people act differently-- they could even go as far
Jealousy has many branches to the name, and can result to jealousy controlling over someone’s physical
For those who don’t have much compared to those who have a lot, jealousy is going to separate them because one always thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Society is going to move forward and won’t move very far if it is being held back by crime. Jealousy is a common motive towards crime because those who don’t have it all want it all. Crime can be a result to jealousy bringing you back by giving you record and so on so forth. Confidence issues are quite popular these days.
Jealousy is a life trait in all humans and even in all types of animals. People always connect jealousy with the feeling of envy, to want some object, characteristic, or person that others have. It is only but natural to have the sense of envy and jealousy. These emotions can be active in everyday life ranging from stories to real life. Jealousy, given its negative connotation, is always portrayed as an adverse outcome. Hedding this information, not always will being jealous cause poor outcomes. Being jealous or envious can cause both superb and traumatic results. Examples could be if person one were zealously jealous of another’s achievements person one may possibly strive to beat the other. An example of an adverse outcome is as such; person one is jealous that another gets something person one can’t so they, therefore, destroy the one thing that they cannot have. Jealousy is a complex, over wavering gut reaction that can change what someone person would do and think about. When coming down to the roots of jealousy, it can boil down to a more terrible situation than that of good ones. Such as in “The Lady or the Tiger”, all of the decision making can also demonstrate the realism of human jealousy.
Some women began to feel like they are inadequate or they feel a sense of emptiness. Women are naturally emotional creatures, so when jealousy and other emotions are put together that is when violence occurs. Ameta, Hainuwele’s father, should have warned her that jealousy has no gender, it can be done by a woman and by a man too.
After reading Intimate Relationships: Chapter 11 Fidelity and Jealousy, I would say that jealousy is the single greatest threat to the well-being and stability of intimate relationships today. Even the first excerpt provides as horrible act done in the name of jealously, “fighter pilot, was found guilty… of capital murder for killing a teenage girl to prove his love for his jealous fiancée”(P.190). My first initial reaction to this is how unhealthy is this relationship that the fiancée would ask her partner to kill someone to prove his love, but then why would he actually go through with this!? Jealousy is explained as the darker side of human nature in this chapter and I truly believe that it can be the downfall to many relationships. Although
In today’s digital age, temptations run rapid than ever before. Our textbook mentions macro and micro reasons for infidelity. Macro reasons include mass media and social networks. According to the website, AshleyMadison.com is “the world's leading married dating service for discreet encounters”. We also live longer than we have in the past increasing the chances of conflict in a relationship. Micro reasons are catered to the individual and their relationship with their partner. Most women are inclined to cheat because their emotional needs aren’t being satisfied. Men partake in sexual infidelity because they want more sex. There are plenty of reasons why men or women cheat in a relationship. I think low self-esteem plays a huge role in whether
But jealousy, and especially sexual jealousy, brings with it a sense of shame and humiliation. For this reason it is generally hidden; if we perceive it we ourselves are ashamed and turn our eyes away; and when it is not hidden it commonly stirs contempt as well as pity. Nor is this all. Such jealousy as Othello’s
