Writing 102 has been a great journey with so many hurdles and loopholes, but overall it has been an exciting experience. This class has exposed me to areas in my writing that needed improvement – especially my punctuations and grammar. One major struggle I had was learning to use more formal words instead of using slang. I learned the importance of structure and the importance of writing in order to organize my ideas and convey my message appropriately to the reader. This class made me realize my greatest fault as a writer, which was not being able to comprehend directions, being unable to write without using first person words, and learning the importance of using peer reviewer’s comments are also barriers I have broken. Before taking the class, I was not exposed to using only third person pronouns in writing. I struggled with this system for a while, but eventually it taught me a valuable life lesson: Life is continuous learning. Nobody can ever know it all. The difference between the mediocre and the great is the ability to see every setback as an opportunity to learn and grow. The following sentence is a sentence from the first paragraph on the first page in my research paper:
“Coming from a different country to America is a big change for many. It is like moving a saltwater fish into fresh water, it is still water, yet it is not the same thing to the fish. Immigrants usually have problems finding food they like, which are foods that taste just the same as what their tongues are used to. But the process of getting native foods that they are accustomed to can be a difficult task”.
This was very difficult to compose without using first person words, because I was trying to use my experience as an immigrant to explain how difficult it could be when moving to a different country. But I found a way to make it work, and this taught me a lesson that there is always a substitute for something else if you are motivated enough to look for
Over the course of the English 1101 course I have learned how I am as a writer including my struggles and strong suits. The four papers written each brought new difficulties and learning experiences. I had a difficult time in this class because I’ve always been a technical writer that pays little attention to sensory details and strong verbs. The narrative, compare and contrast, process analysis, and position papers taught me skills and shows me what I need to work on to become a better writer.
David Rosengarten writes articles about food, wine, travel, and restaurants for multiple publications. In his article “We Are What We Eat: We Are a Nation of Immigrants!” Rosengarten informs readers about the history of what American food is and how it was conceived. Several influences have affected the way cuisine has developed in the United States. Native Americans, slaves from Africa, and Chinese and Italian immigrants have contributed to the development of foods that are commonly eaten in America today.
As people migrate to a foreign country, they often look for ways to connect culturally with their new home country. Unfortunately, sometimes immigrants have trouble dealing with an identity crisis, either identifying with their old culture or with their new culture. One way of coping with this cultural change is through food. Food can help give people a sense of belonging and identity. What Was Served by Douglas Bauer, “We Are What We Now Eat” by Ivan Darias Alfonso and Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian’s shows a correlation between food and identity. Alfonso, Bauer and Balakian show how food allows people reconnect with their native culture meanwhile, Alfonso and Balakain also show how food can help immigrants adapt to a new one.
On the first day, I cannot speak any English at all. I felt very uncomfortable sitting in the class, listening to everybody talking without saying any single word. Later on, I got home, and I was very disappointed in myself. I could have just given up, but I didn’t. I kept on studying very hard, and as the time went by, those hard works paid off. I improved, and I can finally speak with everybody. If I have never face the situation like this, I might have given up on everything that’s hard. Furthermore, I wouldn’t have realized how big this world is and how hard is it to try, and just keep being the same old negative person. When we are facing new vocabulary words from the book we’re reading, if we are not practicing how to use and pronounce it, our English will always be on the same level. Like me, without this situation, I wouldn’t have changed and keep believing in something that was

After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don’t just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future.
When I enrolled in Writing 106, I never expected this course to influence my writing as much as it did. I acquired an immense knowledge about research writing. I learned how to analyze all my work before and after I completed it, gained an understanding of rhetorical situation and how to reflect on my own and my peer’s pieces in a constructive way. The endless cycle of writing and revision opened my eyes to the endless potential for every writing piece. My annotated bibliography and final research paper verify that I have fulfilled the curriculum tasks and have a full understanding of research writing.
English 111 was an educational journey for me. Throughout the course, I was able to develop my own writing style as well as learn how to perfect my writing skills. At the start, I was not fully prepared to be a good writer. I did not know who the writer was inside of me. I could not find her and did not even know where to look. I realized that my goal was not just to get good grades, but be able to understand and absorb the material. The lessons I would learn in English 111 would be of great importance. Being a good writer is necessary in order for me to succeed in any of the adventures that tomorrow might hold. For this reason, my expedition through English 111 made me the writer I am today and there are several reasons how.
The United states is viewed as a melting pot where cultures and people from all over the world come together and form communities where there cultures and lifestyles intermingle. Whether or not their culture survives the americanization that comes along with moving to the “melting pot” is a different question altogether. Food is one of the main points that allows students to see how integrated the cultures are in their society. Many citizens do not make the connection and realize that many foods that were introduced to this country years and years ago were by immigrants that traveled to many areas and brought their traditions and cuisines from their native countries. Things like lifestyle, religion, practices, food, and other issues also are largely affected by the immigration to the United States.
Taking English 1102 my second semester has given me the opportunity to develop my professional writing skills. I learned how to use the writing process effectively by brainstorming ideas, making drafts, and peer evaluations. In addition, I learned the title should give the reader a clue about the main idea of the paper. In my opinion, writing is simply expressing thoughts in a definite form. This self-assessment essay will reflect on my most successful and problematic assignments, errors in my writing, and how I have changed as a writer over the semester.
The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don’t know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine-tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style.
Incidentally, food is one of the habits that immigrants in the US often maintain to some degree, even as many other cultural practices slowly decline. 147 Several factors support this phenomenon, including food’s ability to: provide the immigrants with a daily portion of home, communicate cultural values and social economies, as well as aid in the process of economic mobility. Food literature expresses this legacy of migration, reflecting these same beliefs and their consequences.
Immigration in the U.S. has been greatly shaped by immigrant influence on culture and society. Immigration has had a huge influence on the American society, the first thing that comes to mind is the food. The United States has so many different kinds of foods because of immigration. As mentioned in The Influences of Immigrant Cultures on American Cuisine, “Primary among the influences has been the introduction of immigrant cultures into the “Great American Melting Pot” resulting in an eclectic cuisine unique in the world for its diversity and surprising homogeneity” (2011, 11) . All Immigration in the United States has been influenced by many cultures, for that it was called the “melting pot”. Today, the some scholars believe that the U.S’s population is more accurately described as a “salad bowl”. The term is changing because though the cultures in the U.S. are blended together, but the individual cultures are kept intact. Dr. Mahfouz
Learning formal writing is tough. So many rules and regulations; when do I use a comma? How do I write a thesis statement? How do I add and cite sources? Reflecting back to the beginning of the “Writing 101” course, I was a little worried about not knowing if I’d be able to pick up sentence structure, paragraph structure, and waking my creativity (21 years out of high school), but I was able to get into it and feel good about it. This course has reminded me of how much I love to write.
