The second video on Writing Workshop related to Chapter Thirteen, clearly expresses a much larger portion of the modeling writing techniques written in our textbook. Diane Leonard begins the process the very first day by “providing each student with a writing journal” (first step) and from that day on as they read stories, the students are writing in their journals answers to specific questions. Her lesson starts with building on students experiences regarding a turkey, through answering certain questions then drawing a picture of the animal and labeling its parts and adding describing words (prewriting) they would need to write about turkeys. Mrs. Leonard enforces the concepts by teaching her students a song and then reading the story out
1. In the Neolithic era, about 8000 B.C., a new civilization and culture developed. The reason for this development was the change to hunting and gathering to cultivation of agriculture that permitted man to settle down permanently ending nomadic existence.
This entails working on the Seven Steps to Writing Success will be taught twice a week and writing tasks will also be included during literacy groups. Sizzling Starts and recounts will be the focus text in term one. Narrative and creative writing will be taught too and in both cases the emphasis will be on creating strong sentences with good structure. The lesson format for sizzling starts and narrative/creative writing will be explicit teaching to the whole class. My role as a teacher will be to identify the student’s level and provide appropriate feedback to support to move students toward the next level.
I found the Toulmin Model video and power point to be the most useful in terms of improving my writing. The examples were extremely
The author Calkins explained about Donald Murray’s process which consists on rehearsal, drafting, revision and editing. According to Calkins, most of the writers follow this cycle. Calkins interviewed many writers and each of them explained that none of them sit and immediately start writing. The stage of rehearsal is a state of readiness out which one writes Calkins explains. As teachers, it is important we write often to pass this habit to our students. Writing can be done in a personal notebook, often called journals. Calkins explains that teaching students to write often in a journal is important because it is a place of rehearsal and these ideas are seeds of great writing. Sadly, many students are not encouraged to write, therefore, they do not have the eye of a writer. An important goal for teachers is to “fill their students with a sense of so much to say and life of full possible stories.” For example, Calkins wrote about a teacher who had a ritual in her class. This ritual consisted of writing in their own personalized notebooks. By doing this, students were encouraged to write whatever they thought was important for
The curriculum initiative I chose to actively engage in is our third grade’s Writing Workshop: Four Square Model. The Writing Workshop: Four Square Model initiative is currently in the evaluation phase. The most important aspect of this initiative is provide students with the opportunity to expand upon their writing, add details, and stay organized. So many young writers struggle to develop well-written stories, essays, and descriptions. This method utilizes a simple graphical organizer to take students step by step through the writing process. It can be used for any type of writing project from a simple paragraph to a story or even a persuasive essay. During the project I worked to analyze student data and researched the Four Square Model for school-wide usage.
The chapter also goes into explaining the writing process itself in greater detail. Writers are encouraged to first make sure they fully understand their assignment, before then moving onto throwing around ideas (such as by brainstorming, clustering, ect), developing a thesis statement, and scheduling
After reading “The 12-Step Program to Good Writing” by Michael Gartner, my journalistic knowledge has been expanded and molded all thanks to a journalistic legend. However some of the knowledge came as a surprise. For example, in the second step, Gartner said to read everything including trash. I was taken back because I thought reading an awfully written piece would teach me to write like that. Yet his reasoning proved that it teaches you to identify why that piece is so awful, so you won’t make the same mistake. The second piece of advice I found shocking was in step seven which is to experiment. As a journalist, I thought you were supposed to have the same writing formulas for all articles, but Gartner begs to differ. He taught me to try
The process of writing may seem like a simple task at first but turns out to be a very challenging task for many including myself. Many times I find it hard to begin writing even if I am writing about a topic that I have studied about for a while. Over time of writing it will get easier as you become more familiar with ways to begin writing. After reading chapters 22-24 I think it might be a little easier for me to write because now I know some questions to ask myself and ways to gather all my information about the writing.
In Chapter one: The Process of Writing covers many key concepts. These concepts include being aware of our subject, purpose, audience, genre, and length. Chapter one tells us that when writing we should be aware of our requirements. Requirements helps us get a better rundown on what is expected. This includes knowing what’s needed for the length, subject, deadline, etc. It states we should write more about our interests unless we’re given a specific subject. We should always try to narrow our subject to a question. By doing this helps us stay more organized when writing, it keeps us from getting off track. It states we should know our purpose when it comes to writing. If we know our purpose we’ll know what direction to take it in. We’ll know
The creative writing process video was in fact very helpful. I do understand that writing is a very thought out
Planning and teaching a writing workshop for our SPED groups is not something that my mentor and I do often, due to the fact that for our writing groups we push in with the 4th grade writing teacher at our school. So planning a writing workshop and teaching it to our groups was a little challenging. I ended up observing the writing teacher at our school to see how he conducts a writing workshop in his classroom. After being able to watch his methods and collaborating with him on my thoughts I was able to plan a lesson tailored for our SPED groups so the learning is at their instructional level.
An academic essay is a profound writing of ideas that usually requires you to make an argument on a subject or matter, in an academic essay you must make clear of what you are trying to take a position on. You must establish and gain authority to engage readers to keep them intact with your essay. Critical skills must be implied during an academic essay in order to demonstrate your position. Textual evidence is also a key in order to persuade readers that your statement is knowledgeable and correct; it must include an introduction with full detail, a body, and a conclusion in order to follow the structural aspects of an academic essay.
Writing, I mean the process that we implant our ideas in; use certain skills to arrange them in a pursuable way and of course polish the words with our heart, differs from what I learned under a circumstance of passing a class or getting a good grade in a language test. I am not born in a circumstance that widely use English, and writing to me is a subject that I need to pass my English classes. I do not like to write things with limited topics and selected materials because that is lame and it does not involve many personal interests in it, I like to write things that can deliver my ideas and thoughts with materials that I interested in. I am not a good writer as I lack of understandings of English itself, I cannot find suitable words that
I have met failure throughout my high school career many times: failing tests, failing to make new friends, failing to keep up in challenging courses, mishaps that every student has encountered. From these experiences, I have learned to be more punctual, to study, to be outgoing. Yet, no incident has affected me quite as much as my disappointing National Novel Writing Month club ran during November of my junior year of high school. The club was planned to consist of enthralling and amusing writing activities, group writing sessions, peer editing, and overall building a safe space to act as an outlet for writers to be creative and share their pieces. The ultimate goal was to write a 1,000+ piece that could potentially be published through
I have always had a certain determination and, some might say, stubbornness, that has pulled me through life. When I decide I want something, I do everything I can to get it.
