After perusing Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights, it becomes blatantly obvious that every character in the book is motivated to behave in a specific way. Although Heathcliff’s motivation is easily identified as revenge, and Cathy Heathcliff is motivated by fear to reside at Wuthering Heights, it would seem that two characters, Edgar Linton and Hindley Earnshaw, encounter similar circumstances, yet respond to them in completely different ways. By comparing and contrasting these two perplexing characters, perhaps the reason behind them acting so distinctly from one another can be revealed. In order to identify differentiations between Earnshaw and Linton, first it is necessary to closely examine each character, starting with Edgar Linton. Like most other characters in the novel, Linton despises Heathcliff, which is why he later becomes the victim of Heathcliff’s wrath. His wife, Catherine Earnshaw, dies of mental illness ignited by Heathcliff, causing Linton to enter a state of temporary depression. Earnshaw was an affectionate husband and father until the day his wife died of a mysterious illness, causing him to become a sullen drunkard devoted to playing card games with strangers. Unlike Linton, Earnshaw began to despise his only child, Hareton, and so he tried unsuccessfully to place him under the care of a clergyman. Although Linton had tried to prevent Heathcliff from encountering his family, Earnshaw was so desperate for money that he willingly let Heathcliff take shelter within his own home. By this time, Earnshaw had turned almost everyone in Wuthering Heights against him, and being as miserable and wretched as he was, “he died true to his character--drunk as a lord” (Brontë 178).
