Proposition

Various proposed color recommendations for health care institutions have been created with hypotheses that certain colors affect a patient’s healing and recovery. Research has been conducted that illuminates the influence of color on mood, behavior, physiological and psychological function, illness recovery, and overall health (Rubert, Long & Hutchinson, n.d.). Therefore, does environmental color positively affect a patient’s recovery and healing? How does color affect the length of stay in a hospital? Do certain colors lower anxiety or affect a patient’s perceived pain level? The use of color therapy dates back centuries to the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and early Christian eras (Graham, n.d). For instance, these early cultures believed color was essential to healing, and “colored garments, oils, plasters, ointments, and salves were used to treat diseases and illnesses” (Graham, n.d.). The question arises however, what other factors affect the ability of color to affect healing?

Anticipated Incongruences

Nonetheless, several variables are present that affect the inference that color enhances healing. For instance, of the subjects evaluated, are the characteristics of the patients homogenous? How many of the patients consider themselves resilient, vulnerable, emotional stable? What are the diagnoses of the patients? Age, sex, and gender also will play a role in the reliability of data analysis if color positively affects healing (Brent-Tofle et al.,
