Hokule’a began in 1973 with Ben Finney, and many other canoe enthusiasts, who created the Polynesian Voyaging Society with the intention to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti and back. The design for the Hokule’a was made by Herb Kawainui Kane and Kenneth Emory. In 1975, construction of the Hokule’a was finished and by 1976, the roundtrip from Hawaii to Tahiti began. The whole purpose of the Hokule’a, meaning Star of Gladness, was to bring back the skill, navigation, and bravery that the Polynesians had as they sailed to their new home, Hawaii. This was one of the first tombs, in the transition between dynasties, to have a straight axis style vs the previously used bent axis. This means that the corridors and chambers were vertical not at an angle. Upon entering, there are three sloping corridors that lead to a well and pillared chamber. You continue deeper under the earth down two more corridors that lead to a chamber with entrance to the burial chamber. Dogi Hōryu (or Toki Hōryu/ Toki Hōrin, 1855-1923) was a Shingon (真言) sect priest. He studied at Keiō University with Shaku Sōen (釈宗演, 1859-1919) under the guidance of Fukuzawa Yukichi (福沢諭吉, 1835-1901). In 1893, both Hōryu and Sōen were invited to give a speech during the World’s Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in September, 1893. On his way to Paris after the Chicago conference, he stopped by at London where he met Kumagusu at a home party held on 30th October, 1893 at Nakai Hōnan (中井芳楠, 1853-1903)’s house. Kumagusu spent with Hōryu from 31st till 3rd November till when Hōryu had to depart from London to Paris.
