Year Round Schooling
Were you, or are you the type of kid that would be happy having year round schooling, or do you think it is a bad idea? Year round schooling is a very debatable topic, some people are for it, and some against. With year round schooling, students and teachers have benefits. Students get to rest their minds, and teachers get more time to plan their lessons. Year round schooling also has some negative effects, students get less time for sports, and parents have to run a busy schedule. People can have many different thoughts on year round schooling.

According to a article called “Should schools be year-round? Some students say goodbye to long summer breaks. (News Debate)”, one of the positive effects of year round schooling is that it can help with learning loss. Some of the negative effects I learned about are that year round schooling can make it hard to do sports, I also learned that year round schooling can make a hard, busy schedule for parents. Some of the examples I learned about when researching the topic year round schooling is that Park Elementary School started encouraging other schools to have year round schooling in the 1960’s. I also learned that year round schooling started to become popular in the same decade. Year round schooling can have many effects on the world, some of which are positive, and some,

Year-round schools have gained popularity among the United States, being a very communicated topic within middle class communities. These schools are generally argued about by whether they are beneficial or not. While there are many advantages to year-round schools, there are some disadvantages as well. A few of these disadvantages include the expenses of the schools, the schedules the schools provide, the involvement within the schools, and the actual effectiveness of these schools.
It doesn’t affect you academically, it’s expensive, and it is more difficult. A reason why year round school should not happen is because it does not help you academically. Evidence shows that academic achievement with year-round education is inconclusive. The reason why is because these schools offer more breaks to make up for being in school year-round, so students end up reviewing more than they’re learning.
Year round school calendars aren’t the best idea we’ve had to improve our educational systems. This is just one of many ideas we’ve had. Year round schooling has affected families, students, and required maintenance in many negative ways.
Snow days, teacher institutes, half-days, and holidays bring happiness to every student. With year round schooling, the year feels shorter and faster because the calendar includes more days off of school and longer breaks. The breaks are evenly spread across the calendar. This provides students with time off from school, but not enough to lose what they learned. Year round schooling also helps with transitioning from one grade to the next. Every student hates to see summer end and dreads going back to school even more. Without a long summer, students focus more on school and do not have much time to think about moving from middle school to high school. Days off from school allow families to take more vacations and spend time together. This reduces the amount of negativity or hatred towards school and students develop a positive
Year-round schooling is a good idea because it cuts down on the set backs of long breaks. The summer break that everyone knows and loves used to have a different purpose then just swimming in the sun. In the 19th century the children going to school also worked on family farm, so they used this summer “vacation” to help get ready for the winter months. (McFadden and McMahon) Now that there is less farming families schools do not have to worry about that. By the end of the year, YRS
Year round school affects a lot of people for many reasons. In the text it said that “most families plan vacations over the summer. Year-round schools restrict summer family vacations. They also don't allow students to go away to camp or take on summer jobs to earn money for the future.” This means that families usually will go on vacation in the summertime when it is warm out but year round schools are going to school at that time so they can’t go on a nice vacation. Also in the summer, kids sometimes do lemonade stands to earn money for their future but kids that go to year round schools can’t do that because they are stuck in school in the summer. Another piece of evidence from the text is that “too many breaks disrupt learning. The breaks
You know that summer vacation that you always take with your family? Well if the school board switches to year-round schooling, you will no longer be able to have that vacation. Year-round schooling is turning into a world-wide new experience. With going to school all year long it ruins old traditions like that family vacation in the summer, and having that long stretch of summer relaxation by the pool and on the beach. Some other issues with year-round schooling is the rising cost and schedule adjustments.
This is one reason that we should not have year round school in the United States. Year round schools don't learn any more than the kids in traditional nine month school calendar. The article says,"Students in "year-round" schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools, new research has found." This shows that kids in year round school don't learn any more then kids in the nine month school calendar. If kids don't learn any more than their peers than they shouldn't have to go to year round school. Kids in school deserve to have a summer vacation to hang out with friends and family and to be able to travel.
When a person first mentions the idea of year-round schooling, their comment is usually met with a look of dread. The image of year-round schooling is that students must go to school every day throughout the entire year with no breaks. This is an untrue image. Students are given frequent breaks throughout the school year to make up for the shorter summer break. It was first used in the 1800s, which goes against many people’s thoughts that it is a new alternative schooling proposal (Research). At that time year-round schooling was used in industrial cities to teach English to children of immigrants. By the early 1900s, year-round schooling was used as a method to reduce overcrowding, underfunding,
First of all, going to a year round school will, improve the amount of knowledge a student will gain rather than lose. Found in some studies, “ American students lag behind in their peers in countries like germany and south korea.”. Students who go to year round schools, remember more, than students who get about a
Does year round school truly have a positive impact in the lives of students? Various studies do suggest that year round school is helpful. There are some disadvantages to this type of schooling that are preventing all schools from switching to this type of scheduling. In earlier times schools were only teaching throughout half of the year so that school would be out of session when it was time to work in the fields. This type of scheduling is still common today even though only a small portion of agriculture is tied into education and kids are no longer required to work. “In 1994, the National Education Commission on Time and Learning (1994) urged school districts to develop school calendars that acknowledged (a) differences in student learning and (b) the major changes taking place in American society. The report reflected growing concern about how the school calendar relates to students at risk for academic failure” (Cooper, Nye, Charlton, James, & Greathouse). As a result. many are fighting for year-round school. Year-round school has proven to be beneficial in the lives of students and has lead to greater success in the classroom. Although, there are some downfalls to year-round schooling.
Also many parents work and have kids, so if they are working and there is no school for 2 weeks it can be hard to find babysitters to watch their children. Many teens also like to get jobs over the summer. The teens will not be able to do that because there won’t be a summer break. In text 2 paragraph 5 it says, “ Some critics, however, note that extracurricular activities, like sports and band, may be more difficult under year-round schedule.” It would be hard because if all schools aren't doing the year-round schooling. Also, it would be difficult because it would be hard to get in competitions, plays, and games. (However) year round (schooling does) affect schedules, that isn't’ the main reason why there shouldn’t be year round schooling. The main reason why is because, it rushes into a new school year. After just a week of school ending, it starts right back up again. That gives people no time to get school supplies and it gives zero time for teacher to finalize grades, get their room ready, get school supplies for their own children ,etc. Also, teachers can’t (arrange) a new school year in a week. In text 2 it states, “Finalizing grades and report cards may take place while school is still in session,
Matthew also tells us that, “With the US lagging behind countries such as Korea in terms of academic performance, it may be time to consider drastic changes to our public school system. Year-round schooling might just be a solution—and surprisingly, it could even
What do you do during summer break? Do you go on a long family trip, or do you have to get a job? Now imagine if those plans were ruined by year round schooling. Year round schooling is not beneficial for students and teachers because it can cause more stress, students get summer jobs, and people go on family trips and spend time with family and friends during summer break.
