English Essay: Persuasive Essay by Katie Huang Year-round school is not a good idea. For one, the cost of essential items in school will rise. For parents, it gives them less time for “family time” since their children are too busy doing homework. Also, the student’s homework creates stress and they can’t do the outside activities they desire. Without year-round schools, it would benefit the school, the parents, and the students. Year round schools spend more time at school and smaller breaks; however, it costs more money than traditional schools. Because a year round school is longer than regular schools, the principal needs to pay more money for essentials during a certain season. For example, air conditioning in the summer.
Year round school calendars aren’t the best idea we’ve had to improve our educational systems. This is just one of many ideas we’ve had. Year round schooling has affected families, students, and required maintenance in many negative ways.
Year-round schooling is beneficial to school systems because: it alleviates overcrowding, offers remedial opportunities, decreases teacher burnout, increases retention rates, assists English as a Second Language
Do you think we should have year -round schooling? I say no to year round schooling. All we do in school is learn, and 8 months is more than enough time for students to learn. Kids would not be able to take a break in the summer and play.
Hey did I hear someone say that we are going to have year round school! I don't want school all year. That would be boring, when would we get a break? That would make more people skip school, wouldn't that be bad?! That’s what I thought.
Have you ever thought about having school all year round? Students should not go to school all year round. Students should not go to school all year round because students minds would not be as clear and our health would be better off with the normal schedule.
Imagine, after being in school for 9 weeks you get 2-3 week break. Sounds nice doesn’t it? Well, this can happen. Many schools are switching to year round schooling. Florida should make the switch to it. Students won’t forget what they learned over summer break, and it helps teachers and students get more refreshed. Even though there are positives with implementing year round schooling. (On the other hand) Florida shouldn't make the switch because, it is hard to make schedules for sports, extracurricular activities, and your families schedules. Florida should still switch to year round schooling because there are many good things about it.
Students also would not be able to work summer jobs. Having year-round school also means accommodating utilities in buildings such as air conditioning and other expenses. Another source claimed that “Some critics, however, note that extracurricular activities, like sports and band, may be more difficult under the year-round schedule. Unless the entire district converts to the same calendar, parents with kids in different grade levels can find it troublesome to plan vacations. And although one of the main reasons for switching to year-round schools is to improve retention rates, there is no concrete proof that students improve academically.
Have you ever thought of what it would be like to have a year round school year, as oppose to having one long summer break. Before you go denouncing the idea, put some thought into it. Now the first “problem” with a 12 month school year is that, as you may think, you have many more days of school. Well this is commenly believed to be fact, it is not. Much less known about a year long school year is that summer break is split up into a short break every few months, so their is still the same amount of days, just in a longer timeframe. Secondly, we students know that we work hard, and I mean hard, in school. What if I told you that over summer break you lose, on average, ONE ENTIRE MONTH of knowledge. Do I feel that school should be year round? I feel that school should not be year round. I feel that students and staffs need breaks from each other. I feel students need free time from school and should be able to let their brain rest. I feel that students and teachers need vacation time to leave out of and do things they need to do and want to do. If school was year round I feel the dropout rate would increase, because students will get tired of going to school. I feel that people will have less time to spend with family members and friends.
There has been kind of a war going on in the United States. Some people think that kids should go to school all year around, some people don’t. Now people that want year round school have some good points, like the kids will get more schooling possibly get smarter. Maybe there will be less kids that don’t go to college and they get good jobs so the poverty rate will go down. People who don’t want year round school are probably mostly kids, kids don’t want to go to school in the summer, that probably doesn’t please most kids. The idea of year round school is becoming an increasingly popular idea as this calendar is beneficial to both students and teachers. Under this new calendar, students attend school twelve months rather than nine months. Instead of having a long summer break, which can cause learning loss, students have frequent short breaks throughout the year. The effect of constantly learning throughout the year causes students to improve in test taking. When there is a long summer break, not all students have the same opportunities, creating a gap in achievements. Furthermore, teachers have more time to prepare lessons and teach them. Ultimately, students are more likely to excel in school with this new calendar.
Year round school helps with the complications of childcare issues. Parents won 't have to worry about paying for their child to go to a daycare or a summer camp. Child care can be very expenses and the child might even be upset about going to daycare everyday of the summer. Another child care issue is that if families have older children they could get stuck with watching their younger siblings. Then most of teenagers summer are spent watching their younger siblings when they could be enjoy their summer the way they want.
What would happen if instead of the school year ending with a long summer break, it kept going all year round? Many students and teachers have gotten used to the time schedule that we already have. The school year should remain the same because the students and teachers get longer breaks, have more free time over the summer, and some students have a chance to work a summer only job.
Whether it’s year-round or traditional school they both have drawback, but a year-round schedule would be more devastating than many may think. The negative effects of a year-round schedule are enormous compared to that of a traditional school calendar. “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change” (Quote Garden). Overall the cost would add up, kids would miss quality time with their relatives, and moreover struggle with finding a normal
When students go to a year round school, their grades are better. This academic increase is mainly due to not having summer break. During summer break, students tend to forget most of the information they learned in their previous school year. “At the end of the long break, teachers are finding themselves having to take extra time out of their day to re-teach their students the lessons they already learned the previous year” (Research Spotlight on Year-Round Education). Also, year round school provides teachers with more time to finish all of their lessons. Most teachers don’t even finish teaching the full text book they’re given.
