Year round schools operate 180 days a year just like a traditional school calendar. The difference between year round schooling and a traditional school schedule is that there are small breaks in between instead of a 3 month summer vacation. School systems should not transition to year round schooling because of costs, parents and students perspective, and lack of educational benefits.
School systems should not transition to year round schooling because of costs. According to ESUUS, “Multitrack year round schools have noticed additional demands on school support staff and on cafeteria, custodial, and maintenance services”. This shows that having a year round school system will have more stress to provide services that the school's needs which will overall cost more. According to the California Department of Education, the chart

According to the National Education Association, “Most parents want their children to participate in summer activities and camps during the summer”. Summer gives students an opportunity to do and experience things that schools can’t teach. These things can include getting a summer job, summer camps, and traveling. According to National Education Association, “If an entire district does not adopt a year-round calendar, parents could have students at different schools at different schedules”. This quote is relevant because parents and students schedules would be more complex and stressful. `
School systems should not transfer to year round schooling because of the lack of educational benefits. According to the NEA, “Studies have been inconclusive to its academic benefits. According to a sociologist at Ohio State University, “Over a full year of math and reading test scores improve about the same amount for children in year round schools as they did for schools with the traditional school
One of these many benefits is scheduling. In the article, “Going to School Year-Round”, it states, “...students in most American year-round school districts spend the same amount of days in class as
When individuals think of year-round education, many think that it is an extension of the traditional school year with no breaks and more class time. However, this is not the case. Year-round school systems have the same number of days as any other school system, but the breaks are spread throughout the year differently than the traditional school year. This unchanging view and failure to realize the facts about the system from many people is what makes year-round education a hot topic to debate in terms of whether or not to expand the number of schools who use the system or not. Year-round education can be one of the most beneficial choices for children, as shown in Brigid Schulte’s article, when she describes the benefits her children have
Hillary Scott 1/19/16 3rd hour Year Round School Did you know that 3,000 schools in the United States have year round schools? Year round schools in the United States enroll more than 2 million students each year. Year round school is a school that has no summer break, therefore students attend school for a complete year with breaks in between. More school districts should switch to a year round school calendar because of the great benefits it provides such as, keeping children engaged, less time spent reteaching, and it saves money. Year round school helps school districts save money by a multi track calendar, occupying schools, and more space for students.
To some people test scores may be better, but who is actually going to sit down and have everyone’s test from a year of traditional school and a year of year-round school and do the research on everyone’s test scores. Even in Tracy Huebner’s Year-Round Schooling Educational Leadership he says “Unfortunately, research is inconclusive on whether year-round schooling is an effective to test scores.” I personally think that test scores may get worse because of the scheduling adjustment the students will have to make. In Mathew Lynch’s Year-Round Schooling Arguments he says “For parents with children of different ages and
This is one reason that we should not have year round school in the United States. Year round schools don't learn any more than the kids in traditional nine month school calendar. The article says,"Students in "year-round" schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools, new research has found." This shows that kids in year round school don't learn any more then kids in the nine month school calendar. If kids don't learn any more than their peers than they shouldn't have to go to year round school. Kids in school deserve to have a summer vacation to hang out with friends and family and to be able to travel.
Does year round school truly have a positive impact in the lives of students? Various studies do suggest that year round school is helpful. There are some disadvantages to this type of schooling that are preventing all schools from switching to this type of scheduling. In earlier times schools were only teaching throughout half of the year so that school would be out of session when it was time to work in the fields. This type of scheduling is still common today even though only a small portion of agriculture is tied into education and kids are no longer required to work. “In 1994, the National Education Commission on Time and Learning (1994) urged school districts to develop school calendars that acknowledged (a) differences in student learning and (b) the major changes taking place in American society. The report reflected growing concern about how the school calendar relates to students at risk for academic failure” (Cooper, Nye, Charlton, James, & Greathouse). As a result. many are fighting for year-round school. Year-round school has proven to be beneficial in the lives of students and has lead to greater success in the classroom. Having traditional schooling gives kids the chance to spend time with some friends and family that they might not be able to see often. If our school was to switch to year-round schooling it would ruin our chance to be able to spend more time with friend and family. Many families leave for summer and go on some sort of trip so somewhere that they don’t go very often, but if year-round schooling was to take place then this would cut the amount of time we get to leave and spend time in places we have never been to or see family and friends we don’t see very often. Family trips are very important for building bonds and connecting with
