A torn labrum and partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. After his injury he made a comeback. Have you ever given up on something, like homework and then failed that class, In Fever 1793, Laurie Halse Anderson uses never giving up by Mattie and Mother to show us that giving up gets us nowhere. In the book fever when the fever outbreaks everyone thought this was the illness to wipe out mankind. After a wile Mattie and grandfather were kicked out of the coffee shop so Mattie would not catch the fever. And in the end they survived (except grandfather). Never giving up means you can do great things.
The Black Sox Scandal was during the 1919 World Series. The Chicago White Sox lost the series to the Cincinnati Reds. This was the biggest scandal ever in professional sports. Eight White Sox players were later accused of throwing the game in exchange for money from gamblers. The players were acquitted in court, but nevertheless, they were all banned for life from baseball.
This cliché echoed in my ears as I picked myself off the floor. I could see the crowd in the sidelines—fans in worry and shock. I tried to get up only to find that I could not. Some teammates sprinted over to help lift me up, but their sportsmanlike intentions only worsened the pain. After gathering enough willpower, I arose and hobbled over to the bench, feeling ashamed at my inability to fend for my own team.
Seventy-three years ago, on July 4th, a man whose skillset lied on the baseball field, much rather than in speechmaking, delivered one of the most effective and inspiring speeches of all time. His name was Lou Gehrig, and in the matter of approximately two minutes, he managed to reflect not only his own thoughts of his disease and retirement from baseball, but also the thoughts and mindsets of his fans and the American people during the 1930s. Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech, famously including the aforementioned quote, drew upon many rhetorical strategies in order to convey themes and emotions that, especially during the time period, were extremely important to his fans and all people. Gehrig heavily utilized ethos and pathos to “argue” his point, and it was these two rhetorical appeals combined that allowed him to establish himself as a humble and thankful man who considered himself nothing but lucky to have been given the opportunities in life that he had been given.
There are many reasons that people use this quote and those just happen to be the best reasons to use this quote in your speeches. There was a big reason that Lombardi decided to use this quote in his super bowl, speech to the packers in the 60’s, that reason being it got his players motivated and wanting to go out and win the game because there was nothing better than winning in sports. The other reasons that this should stick with
“Yesterday’s home run doesn’t win today's game” This is a quote from Babe Ruth. He was a Major League baseball player. Even though he was a baseball player he did other things too. This quote is an example, it is saying that what you did in the past is not gonna do the task that you need done today. Babe Ruth impacted society by being an leader, hard worker, and an inspiration.
There comes a time in everyone's life when they will want to give up. It seems to be easier to give up rather than persevere through any tough obstacles that throws at you. There are three quotes from three books that demonstrates perseverance in the books called “The Lost boys”, “Mother to Son”, and “Saudi Arabia's Freedom Riders”. The first quote that demonstrates perseverance is from the book “Mother to Son”. This lady gave advice to her son about life.
“If I would be happy, I would be a very bad ball player. With me, when I get mad, it puts energy in my body” (Roberto Clemente). Roberto Clemente was a bad baseball player, a mad baseball player, and a sad baseball player, but became a great legend in the baseball world. Roberto Clemente had done some things that have never been done, used persisting as a habit of mind to innovate to overcome his home and his sports effect, and illuminated the world by his abilities.
A lesson I took from the story about achieving success is that no matter what obstacle you encounter, you need to keep pushing forward to your end goal and beyond. Certain situations can cause us to pause or if they’re severe to completely give up on our goals.
He had intimidation skills, and he burned with a dark fire. He wanted passionately to win. He bore the burden of a pioneer and the weight made his more strong. If one can be certain of anything in baseball, it is that we shall not look upon his like again" (Kahn, 1972).
“It's never over,” Derek Jeter once started, “You don't want to be in the position to be down four runs in the ninth inning, but it's not over until the last out.”
I choose this quote because it reminds me to never give up. When I think about it, it reminds me when I will be doing something hard like playing a level in a game or a shot that is difficult, to keep doing it over and over again until I can finally master it. Also, I think this is an important quote from Bo Jackson to say because he probably had to set his goals high. He played two professional sports, football and baseball. He probably had to try really hard when he was a good football player in the NFL and wanted to be a player in the MLB. He set his goal high, practiced and practiced and didn’t stop until he got to his goal. He also is one of the few rare players
I was born in Independence, MO on November 14, 1999. I was born into a sports family. My great grandpa and grandpa started teaching me baseball as soon as I could hold one. My great grandma and grandpa babysat me while my Mom was at work. He would sit on the floor and roll the ball to me. When it got warmer, we would go outside and play on his deck. I have loved baseball ever since. Sports have always been my passion. I play baseball and basketball. I started playing basketball my freshman year of high school and started playing baseball as soon as I was ready. There was never a time in my life where I wanted to stop playing sports, never once. I have never had a coach that has made me want to quit playing. If I had a coach that hated me, I paid attention to myself and didn’t let him get to my head about playing the game. I am going to try so hard to go as far as possible with baseball. I want to play baseball for the rest of my life. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was in middle school. I’ve known what I wanted to do with my life for the longest time. Sports are “my everything” and
No matter what team I was on I never gave up. I was so determined that my eight-grade year was going to be different. Sure enough, I ended up on the A-team in the eight-grade. I thought that was the most wonderful thing in the world; I though all
