Amongst all the other photographs, this portrait of Mr. Yoshihisa Koike and Mrs. Takeshi Koike caught my attention. The portrait of the mother and son was taken in the year of 1984, and was accompanied by another follow up in the year of 2004. Not only has Bruce Osborn document the transience of time, he as successfully captured a certain tangibility of the parent-child relationship. I was intrigued by these two images particularly, because I found it interesting as Bruce Osborn decided to display these two photographs side by side; almost like a progressing timeline of one’s growth. Through this removal of colour, it removes any unwanted distractions and draws full attention to the subject matters, and consequently textures, lighting, and contrast. The black and white quality of the photo also brings about the element of past. (Elaborated further in part B) • Lighting aspects/ Exposure Consequently, by removing the colour from the images, it also emphasizes how the light plays in each constructed frame. Therefore, the removal of the colour is most significant in this work. • Camera Angle The series is composed of photographs taken in the form of a Long Shot. The Long shot shows the entire human body. ¬The camera is also positioned below low eye level, and photographs are taken from a distance from the subjects. • Background The background is composed of a simple white backdrop; the white backdrop is also lighted to ensure the smooth spread of light. This paints a matt surface that essentially reduces the depth of field between the subject matter and the backdrop. The simplicity and lack of intricacy therefore isolates the subject matter in the foreground.
