I could feel he stares of people, Nephilim had been a lot less common than they used to. Lowell patted my shoulder noting how tense I’d gotten, I had reason to be. There were many unpleasant reasons Celestial Hybrids were rare. “He’s at his usual booth,” Lowell said, “Just relax and I’ll be close.” He left me alone to go meet with his ‘contact’, a trim little Felin with amber colored eyes. I just turned to spot my contact, a squat little [Gnome] called Roy. Beady eyes were locked on me as I approached and he let out a puff of cigar smoke. “Lydia Fralich,” He said as I approached “Ain’t seen you in a while.”. He was seated with his back to the wall in the booth. A strategic move that allowed him to see his bar and avoid being surprised. His bodyguards, two mountains of muscle likely the same genus as the big fellow outside, were mostly likely carrying .38 supers concealed under their suit jackets. I had my own as well, standard issue enchanted .32, I never left home without it and Jimmy knew better than to try and take it in a weapon’s check. Ray had two women sitting in the booth hanging onto him, Likely [Dryad] judging by the greenish tint of their skin. [Dryads] were unusual to have around, they usually hated living in any sort of city. With a wave of his hand though he sent them off to the bar. He whistled through his

W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for “Losing a Language” in the title, hinting at the lament-like characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests: language and words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone to emphasize the loss and quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the piece but to become the dominant thought
As many other tribe names, the name Tlingit means “the people”, or essential human being. The Tlingit are one of the many first nation tribes that lived and still currently live in Alaska. They live alongside many other tribes, which include the Northern Haida (Kaigani) and the Tsimshian (de Laguna 1: pp 13). The Tlingit have formed close ties with the Haida tribe. Though it is estimated that the Haida are a newer tribe to the area both tribes have common interests and have worked together to establish a Central Council; in 1935 which according to their website was originally established to deal with land issues on behalf of the tribes which relied on their lands for subsistence and survival (“About us” www.ccthita.org). Part of the need for the council is that unlike many tribes many tribes, particularly those of the lower the United
In the essay, titled "Building Baby from the Genes Up?" Ronald M. Green proclaims his approval of genetic selection and extraction of human genes. He gives reasons that support his outlook on the matter, that this will be useful to civilization. Ronald M. Green is in violation of several ethical codes, with his view on genetic modification. I am against genetically modified humans, and I will explain to you, why this is my stance on the subject. First, I will summarize exactly what Ronald M. Green says in his article about his view on genetic modification and why practicing it is vital. Second, I will describe research
The novel Mark Haddon has written contains a lot of meaningful ideas and has successfully written it in a way that is skilful and provides a variety of appropriate language and distinctive qualities that include diagrams, structure of the novel and narration. In doing that, it allows the audience to provoke thought and challenges them with profound views about the deep and meaningful ideas that are within the novel. The audience is introduced to different concepts such as Christopher’s struggles with the acceptance of truth, values of family relationships, growing up, and social interaction which are all evident in the novel and shown through Haddon’s use of different language and conventions.

He began recording his conversations with other police officers, mostly supervisors who would punish him for the way he performed him job. Ray’s first recordings were about a warning about a lieutenant confronting him about his low activity and admitting that the department was all about the numbers. Ray’s post and reputation grew worse, but he still continued to give less summons. His immediate supervisor who was also a black sergeant from Trinidad called him in to give him a negative evaluation, which he had been forced by his superiors, so he continued to ask questions to get confessions on the recordings.
I chose to write about the Baca essay, “Coming into Language” because it stood out to me the most and it was very different from the other essays we had talked about in class. Baca had a tough time growing up and attending school, “Ashamed of not understanding and fearful of asking questions, I dropped out of school in the ninth grade” (53). Although Baca’s trips to jail became a frequent event he discovered the art of language, “It scared me that I had been reduced to this to find comfort. I always had thought reading a waste of time, that nothing could be gained by it” (54). Ever since Baca taught himself to read and write, his desires became enraged and passionate, “But now I had become as the burning ember floating in darkness that descends
In the article "M11 - Abercrombie - SarcasmDetectionContext", authors presented their research on a very important topic of Sarcasm detection as it has become an important part of social media monitoring process. Even government agencies are looking for such models that can detect sarcasm, humor or irony. Just witness the confusion when on a Twitter or a Facebook someone jokingly threatens to blow up an airport. Any machine learning algorithm used by a security agency can catch this and raise a false alarm. This is also important as many corporate organizations want to attract new consumers and retain the old ones for better customer management. However, many angry consumers post sarcastic reviews on sites like Amazon or Yelp. Any standard
Language is said to be one of the most contagious viruses known to man. Interestingly, the film Pontypool takes that expression to heart in the interesting zombie movie emphasizing how language can be spread so easily. The main plot involves radio announcer Grant Mazzy and his experience in dealing with a deadly virus that is transported through sound. The film was definitely interesting, but the true meaning behind it explains that language is something that can be spread easily and much like a virus, once people start talking, containing the spread is nearly impossible in today’s interconnected world.

Run-on sentences is also another one of my weaknesses as a writer which is not as big as a problem as my weakness of verb tense use. Another of many disadvantages of a writer in my point of view is my able to organize my sentences so they run smoothly. I need to work a little bit more on my internal organization of paragraphs. I don’t exactly incorporate quotes so that my sentences run as smoothly as they can. All together I think these couple of disadvantages of my writing is minimal and that I can work on these mistakes out if I would proof read my papers more in depth. If I can work out my weaknesses from my writing I will have more advantages and also be considered a better writer.
In Jorge Luis Borges’ short story “The Library of Babel”, the author depicts the entire universe in the form of a mysterious and intricate “Library.” The author gives life to the library by describing the fruit- like “bulbs” that emit light, as well as a vestibule which contains two compartments for “sleeping and satisfying one’s physical necessities.” (Borges 112) This library is lined with “an infinite number of hexagonal galleries,”(Borges 112) containing bookshelves with an immeasurable amount of books. However, most of these books are indecipherable, and therefore, meaningless. Borges’ characterization of the library leads the reader to believe that he is alluding to the numerous books of the Bible. He questions the Bible’
Have to is a non-modal alternative to the modal verb must to talk about obligation.
There are many bilingual and multicultural people in the world today. For many, the choices of which language they use, and how they use it, correspond to what social or cultural community they belong to. Amy Tan, a Chinese American novelist, portrays this well in her short essay "Mother Tongue." Tan grew up in two vastly different worlds, using different "Englishes." The first world, which consists of her close family, she speaks what we may call "broken" or "limited" English. The second world, which is her business and professional world, Tan speaks and writes perfect standard and academic English. Having to "shuttle" between these two communities with very different languages has had many different positive and negative effects on
