“You do know what I’m talking about,” Charlie whispered and shrunk down slightly in the water.
“I don’t,” Scarlett mumbled so low that he couldn’t even hear her.
Charlie sat up and looked at her for a moment before scooting close to her so that he was right next to her. She was still sitting cross-legged so he didn’t get very close. She wasn’t looking at him, but instead was staring into space.
“Hey,” Charlie whispered. When Scarlett didn’t respond, he turned her shoulders so that she was looking at him. “Stop shutting yourself off,” Charlie said and pulled her lightly onto his lap.
“I don’t shut myself off, Charlie. I just get… nervous,” Scarlett mumbled and broke her gaze. She felt awkward with him right now. She couldn’t quite figure out why, but his presence felt different from before.
“And then when you get nervous, you shut out the people who love you,” Charlie finished with a snide look on his face.
“The people that love me…….” Scarlett whispered.
“Yes Scarlett. You know, you really scared me today. I…… I thought I’d lost you.” Charlie whispered and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“I’m sorry.” She mumbled into the water.
“I’m not asking you to apologize, babe. I just want you to know that I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you. You mean a lot to me.” Charlie pulled Scarlett tight against his chest and kissed her forehead.
*Knock Knock*
“Is that the door?” Scarlett asked.
“Yeah I think so,” Charlie sighed.
“I’ll get it,” Scarlett stood and…
