Current responses
For the purposes of this research chapter I shall be exploring youth works response to the issue of alcohol consumption among young people today. According to the Youth Work Act 2001;
“Youth work” means a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation, and which is—
(a) Complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education and training; and
(b) Provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations.
Youth workers achieve this by creating circumstances which enable young people to feel comfortable with themselves, make and sustain personal relationships, reach their potential and find their place in society. Due to the nature of their work, youth workers form close relationships with the young people they engage with. These relationships are central to the youth work process. It is essentially a partnership, which allows the young people space to express themselves and provides an opportunity for learning which they may otherwise ignore. By utilising this relationship youth workers can offer essential support to the young people during the crucial stages of their development by befriending them, listening to them and advocating on their behalf. The importance of this relationship does not change when working with young people around issues such as alcohol. In fact, in many ways it actually benefits the facilitation of the
Explain how current and relevant legislation and policy affects work with children and young people.
The widespread feeling today is that there are more troubled teenagers than it was in the past, the increase of gangs, drugs, and guns will continue to be a social problem. Youth gangs are increasingly becoming a minority problem, and this trend is likely to increase in years to come, the drugs choices of juvenile may change in the future but that don’t mean it will be less of a problem than it is now, their choice of drugs today is cocaine and methamphetamine. Juveniles will continue to drink alcohol, and there is no reason to believe that the use of alcohol will be less of a problem than at present.
The government also established the contemporary Youth Justice System and the Youth board a non-departmental public body, which was given the overall responsibility for the youth justice and creates interdisciplinary including with police, social services working within a framework to end youth offending. The (CDA) placed a statutory responsibility on all those who work with the youth justice system to gives consideration to the main aim of preventing offending in children and young people this was the set of objective for managing young people, and identified those as at risk of offending (Goldson, 2000 cited in Byrne and Brooks
The public service of assisting youth may be one of the most difficult jobs around. Not only does the job have to consider what is in the best interest of the child but it also
Making a positive contribution - development of self-confidence, to ensure understanding of rights and responsibilities, the extent to which young people are consulted about key decisions. Opportunity to develop by including community activities. Also a focus on enabling young people to develop appropriate independent behaviour and to avoid engaging in antisocial behaviour. Achieving economic well-being - arrangements for developing self-confidence, enterprise and teamwork, the provision of good careers advice and training for financial competence, and the accessibility of opportunities for work experience and work-based learning.
Every 51 minutes in America, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash. A dangerous issue facing society today is the problem of teen drinking and driving. Currently an approximate of 10,076 people die in drunk driving crashes per year. If positive progress to ceasing this act does not happen, teens will continue to drink and drive putting everybody on the road at risk. Teens who drink and drive put everyone on the road at risk, causing serious crashes that could be preventable.

Youth unemployment has been a constant problem in Australia for decades. In Treasurer Scott Morrison and the Coalition’s 2016-17 budget, a new plan focusing on helping young people join the workforce aims to drastically lower the youth unemployment rate over the next few years: the ‘Youth Jobs PaTH Program’. The $752 million dollar program aims to help up to 120,000 vulnerable young people over the next four years (Budget 2016-17, Queensland Government). However, there is a concern how effective the scheme will be, due to its emphasis on purely internships. Many argue that the Coalition’s youth unemployment scheme ‘Working Futures’ is a better option to lower youth unemployment, for its alternative structure and focus. To decide which one is best for Australia, both the Coalition and Labor Party’s scheme will be judged by analysing their social impacts upon the Australian youth.
As I am relatively new to this area of work it is also important to reflect as a youth worker in order for me to be effective and capable within my job. It is necessary for me to reflect on my experiences so far from the year and a half I have spent in college and it’s important for me to continually highlight areas for development while I am on placement. First I must identify the strengths and skills I have acquired and then to plan my development needs. My role requires me develop plans to suit the service users; I feel my current qualifications and experience will develop after my placement. I also feel it is essential to enhance my current knowledge of youth and community work and monitor my progress. I think the important thing to remember is that I am reflecting for my own development.
Anyone who is below eighteen years of age is considered as underage and laws in many countries prohibit such a person from consuming alcohol. Alcohol happens to be the most commonly abused drug not only among the youth but also among adults. This paper explores underage drinking, its effects on the society and outlines what can be done to curb it.
Most of the problems facing today’s youth are not restricted to any one ethnic or religious group, but affect young people generally. Most discussions on youth have focussed on issues such as drug abuse, crime, violence, sexuality and poverty. In addition to these, today’s youth are afflicted by new challenges.
