After watching the youtube video, Zeitgeist: Moving Forward 2011, it is evident that the video touches upon the many concepts discussed in Chapter two of our Sociology book. Chapter two explains culture as a society or group of people that is defined by their language, arts, values, beliefs, food, and customs. In everyday life, people are surrounded by material culture and nonmaterial culture. Material culture includes things like jeans, chopsticks, or a jade necklace. Nonmaterial culture would consist of a society’s core values, beliefs, and behaviors. The video Zeitgeist: Moving Forward 2011 provides relevant topics to our content in chapter two.
One of the concepts that was discussed in both the video and the textbook is the view that genes influence human behavior. This view comes from the sociobiology, which is the biological study of human and animal behaviors in life. People who made the claim that genes strongly influence human behavior are called sociobiologists. In both the textbook and the movie, they both explain why this view is not considered accurate. The textbook gives example of findings that show how genes influence human behavior; however, the findings fail to include the social environment that can have a

This similarity among cultures is called cultural universals. Cultural universals concentrates on the overarching idea rather than focusing on the specifics and details. An example from the textbook of a cultural universal is marriage. Marriage happens in all cultures but the rituals of marriage and the age and gender of marriage is all different when thinking about specifics. A cultural universal discussed in the movie would be the desire for money and power. Whether a country is ruled through democracy, communism, socialism, or a dictatorship, people will always value and strive to be rich and obtain
This paper explores the Movie “It’s Complicated” a 2009 romantic comedy film, based of the novel written by Nancy Meyers. In this movie Jane and Jake Adler are a divorced couple of ten years. They start a secret love affair in New York, at their son’s graduation. While Jake is trying to have a family with his much younger wife, Agnes. There are many similarities within cultures and their effects on parenting practices. For example, there are no underlying secrets to building a sustainable and loving relationship with your child. In the movie, it displayed something that they
The movie Grown-Ups (2010) is about a group of high school friends who reunite after their beloved high school basketball coach passes away during the summer. The main characters that make up this particular group of friends include Lenny Fedder (Adam Sandler), Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James), Kurt Mckenzie (Chris Rock), Marcus Higgins (David Spade), and Rob Hillard (Rob Shneider). The childhood buddies come together at a funeral and decide to take their families on a getaway trip. They believe it would be a good idea to rent a rundown cabin on the lakeside and have their families enjoy the great outdoors while spending time with each other over the Fourth of July week. However, this particular group of adults now have kids and wives who are very
In pages one through twenty-one in the novel Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to Working With People from Other Cultures, by Brooks Peterson, the author introduces us to the basis and idea of culture, and what it truly is. He describes how we as individuals see others and how we tend to acknowledge their distinct cultivations. Part of living in America means coming across individuals who live a different lifestyle than we may live. We are a society filled with people from all over the world. Therefore, it is crucial that we as Americans and as people understand the significance and idea of what culture really is and how it affects different individuals.
There are many different cultures in the world and even some people that share the same culture as you. According to Heslin , “Culture is the language, beliefs, values, norms behaviors and even material objects that characterize a group and are passed from one generation to the next” (p. 42), The way we see reality and the way we perceive everything has to do with our culture. Our culture helps us make our decisions by both material and nonmaterial culture. Material culture is the material objects that a group of people may value, touch, taste and see, such as their art, hairstyles, food, clothing and jewelry. Nonmaterial culture is more abstract. It includes a group’s way of thinking and doing. For example, values and morals, like working hard builds success or the belief in freedom (Henslin, 2012).
Culture itself can be broken into further components. One of them would be material culture. According to the course content powerpoint, this kind of culture is basically the physical objects of a society, and what kind of meaning they are given based on the context it is in. There are a few examples of this. One would be clothing. In hip hop culture, its material culture would consist of clothing that if it was in the early 2000’s, people apart of it would be wearing baggy clothing. The meaning of baggy clothing was a revolt against of what was considered more normal and safe attire, which does relate to the music since hip-hop can get very explicit. Another example of material culture could be an art piece. If a bunch of artwork is
A culture is an idealized pattern of meanings, values, and norms differentially shared by the members of a society, which can be inferred from the non-instinctive behavior of the group and from the symbolic products of their actions, including material a artifacts, language, and social institutions.
Chapter 3 of The Real World: An Introduction to Sociology explains to the reader what culture is and goes into depth of the different concepts within culture. It defines culture as “the entire way of life for a group of people” (Ferris & Stein, 2010, p. 77). Culture is described as a “lens” through which one views the world and is passed from one generation to the next. This “entire way of life”, according to sociologists, consists of two major categories: material and symbolic culture. Material culture involves the entities associated with a cultural group, such as tools, machines, utensils, buildings, and artwork. When examining material culture, it can convey a great deal about a particular group or society. Symbolic culture embraces ways
Human behavior is affected both by genetic inheritance and by experience. The ways in which people develop are shaped by social experience and circumstances within the context of their inherited genetic potential. Each person is born into a social and
In the film, one cultural similarity I noticed was the diversity of nationalities. Vinz is Jewish, Said is Arab, and Hubert is African American. In most suburban "ghetto" communities there are people from different nationalities all in a similar situation.
At age 15, Ellen is the youngest child of the Grape family and assumes a minimal caregiver role to her mother. Ellen is in early adolescence and is struggling with the psychological crisis of group identity versus alienation. Newman & Newman (2012) surmises that there are pressures to be like everyone else and to function as a member of a group. Ellen experiences the negative side of this crisis: alienation. The movie only depicts her in public or at home, but her embarrassment of her family is evident. She is preoccupied with her social life and anything that distracts her from it is viewed with some level of scorn. This sense of social estrangement derives from her self-consciousness about what people
Culture is a way of living in a particular group of people. Culture encompasses language, values, beliefs and decision making processes. Within a culture there are significant material and non-material items. Material items refer to tangible objects such as: clothing or artifacts. For example, a patient may find it difficult to wear a hospital gown if their culture adheres to strict dress code. The hospital gown maybe considered non-conforming clothing, since it doesn’t cover the entire body and leaves room for exposure. Non material culture refers specific customs and beliefs. Never assume individuals
The world of Genetics is one that is both fascinating and interesting. When tackling how genetics plays a role in behavior, one must look within the scope of what genetics is before dealing with how it plays a significant role in one’s behavior. Simply put, genetics is the study of genes. It is a biological component within the entire study of biology itself. Scientists who study genetics and perform research do so with the intent to learn more about how genetics affects the overall attitudes, behaviors and dispositions of individuals. It could be said that genetics is somewhat of a psychological-biological science as researchers look at the underlying patterns within the genes that cause
There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated, science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre.
The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one’s life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, “culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization.” From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.” Culture is one of the things that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.
