Robert Zemeckis directed the animated epic Beowulf based on the Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name in 2007. Both film and poem follow the life of Geatish hero Beowulf and his battles before and during his reign as king, which ultimately lead to his demise. The characters’ flaws, the role of women, and the importance of family relationships are all significantly different in the movie which in turn shows the differences in values in Anglo-Saxon and American societies.
The first difference is that the Beowulf poem has a much cleaner characterization of the protagonist than the movie does. For example, in the poem Beowulf never lies or succumbs to weakness or failure. He’s depicted as the perfect role model for Anglo-Saxons. In the movie however, he tarnishes his noble reputation by doing things like selfishly failing to kill Grendel’s mother and then lying about it. This notable contrast indicates the difference in societies. Anglo-Saxons were obviously all about the perfect hero, while Robert Zemeckis was creating a hero that society could relate to and see as a fellow human just as flawed as themselves.

In the poem, women are depicted as insignificant and incapable if they are mentioned at all. The opposite occurs in the movie. For example, when Grendel’s mom attacks Heorot in the poem, the “hag” only manages to take one thane’s life before retreating and later being slaughtered by Beowulf. In the movie, she wreaks havoc on the city and slaughters many. She also easily seduces Beowulf and has control over him for basically the rest of his life. This demonstrates the progress that the emancipation of women has made in society. From being insignificant and almost invisible in the poem to having powerful roles in the movie, women are substantially portrayed as powerful and epoch-making in today’s motion-picture of
Comparing the book and the movie of Beowulf, you find mostly differences. The amount of similarities between them are actually very slim. Either ranging from what is said or changing scenes completely altogether, they’re both very different from each other. Having said that, the differences need to be stated and reviewed. We will begin with the first scene in which the king is being merry and Grendel attacks the hall.
Nowadays, many young people in the world always read the literature book with many stories like science fiction, comedy, fantasy, and romance in life and society. Two of the most famous literature stories that make me really love it called “Beowulf” and “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” Both of this story illustrated between these women 's always try to overcome with all the mission in life and show their responsibility to achieve successfully in life. Thus, the poet shows that the women 's role in British literature is a very good central point, they always face with all these conflicts about the protagonist male throughout the poem. Besides that, Beowulf and Sir Gawain always challenge with all the women in the story about their power and honor. Thus, the poet assumes all the women in the literature focus on the life actions and deeds with the male hero. In the literature work, all the women try to bring everyone in their lives with all the peace, and their sole purpose in life was to please a man’s every desire through the story. In both stories, the role of women 's is important to everyone in our society and life. We cannot deny the importance of women role in society as a wife or a mother in their families. They have a responsibility to take care of their own personal lives and their families by overcoming many obstacles from these heroes in the poem. Throughout the stories, the presence of the role of women in literature is very important and necessary in life with
The narrative and the film have dissimilarities in terms of their characters. In the story “Beowulf: A
There are many complex differences between Beowulf the movie and the textbook such as Beowulf cut Grendel arm different ways in the book and movie. Beowulf killing Grendel mother in the book, but in the movie she lives. Another difference is Beowulf being king of the Geats in the book, but king of Dane in movie. Also Beowulf killed the dragon by his self in movie, but in the book Wiglaf helps Beowulf killed the dragon. Then another difference was when Beowulf cut Grendel head off and brought back to Danes but in the movie Grendel mother cut Grendel head off.
Beowulf is portrayed as a hero-figure, though a less-than-ideal leader, since his warrior-like tendencies and habits follow him. Conversely, the movie Beowulf portrays our hero as more of an anti-hero. By its very nature, Beowulf is an epic hero, but I do not think that the movie does not portray him as such a hero compared to the original translation, because it has an entirely different storyline. If anything, the movie portrays Beowulf as a weak person, easily swooned by the beauty of Grendel’s mother. The movie and the book differ in several key ways, including his relationship with the kingdom and his villains. Even though the general plot is the same, when you really take a deep look at the differences, Beowulf’s movie ceases to be a version of Beowulf anymore, but rather an entirely new story about the same person.
Beowulf is about a man who comes to Denmark because word made it to him that a terrible monster had been slaying men at night for 12 years. He sails over there, obliterates a monster, kills the monster's mother in an underwater building, becomes king, and slays a dragon 50 years later, which in turn ends up killing him as well. Although both the animation and the book follow this basic storyline, they do have their differences such as in the animation, Beowulf uses a sword to defeat grendel rather than just beating him to death like in the book. The book and the animation are pretty similar, but they do have countless minor differences.
In the movie and the book there were many contradictions and similarities, nevertheless; in both Beowulf was still seen as a great warrior. The first difference between the two was that in the book Grendel acted as a coward and only came when the Danes were sleeping, but in the movie, he came while the Danes were still celebrating. The second difference was in the book Beowulf fights Grendel’s mother; however, in the movie he does not, fight Grendel’s mother. Lastly, in the book the dragon was not Beowulf’s son; in the movie, the dragon was Beowulf’s son. These are the main three differences that will be covered in this essay.
Robert Zemeckis Beowulf movie version earned his knowledge from his own mistakes, then he lied to the king about grendel's mother. But he said that he killed him, but the queen knew that he was lying and knew about him laying with grendel’s mother. But he said that he killed and was exaggerating her death by making a story, but the queen didn't believe it. Then later on in the movie he gets visited by his son that he made with grendel's mother. when it was time to fight the dragon he told Wealtheow that he did not want to be remembered as a king or a hero but as a man. But what he said was that he did not want to be remembered as a person who ruled or killed many beasts or a person with riches, but for the mistakes he made and how
When reading or watching the epic tale of Beowulf, there are, as with most tales, multiple accounts to consider. Many of the accounts are told in almost extremely different ways. For example, someone reading the original translated text of Beowulf would find many blatantly obvious differences between it and the 2007 animated movie Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis.
On the other hand, another difference between the movie and the book is Beowulf lies about killing Grendel’s mother. Instead of killing her, he had sex with her. They had a dragon together. His son was doing harm to people, so he had to kill the dragon. What that does is change the whole theme. He puts more people in danger, including himself. The dragon killed Beowulf. In the movie he fought the dragon under the water instead of Grendel’s mother. In the movie they made him a liar.
Society has come a long way since the Middle Ages culturally and intellectually and can be clearly viewed throughout English literature. With this change comes a more abstract and evolved way of thinking. With that said, there is a massive distinction between the concepts and characters of the original text of the selection and the 2005 film Beowulf and Grendel. These differences include how the creators of the selections from the two societies use certain aspects to attract the attention of the audiences during their respected times in history and how the characters are portrayed in each works.
There are many, many differences between the writings of Beowulf and the theatrical interpretation of Beowulf. Included in the differences between the poem and the movie is the scenery around Grendel’s mother’s cave. In the poem the cave is protected by sea monsters and Beowulf slayed a monster to gain entry and the other sea monsters are scared off with the trumpets of Thane. In the movie the entrance to the cave is deserted and Beowulf carefully enters the cave with ease. The huge difference between the poem and the movie completely changes the outcome and moral of Beowulf. In the movie there is no forewarning of life’s delicate state by Hrothgar and much of the moral that Beowulf learns is lost within the way the movie focuses on Grendel’s mother’s beauty rather than her
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
All things in this world are two. In our minds we are two, Good and Evil. The modern film maker Robert Zemeckis adapted the Epic Angle - Saxon poem Beowulf very well in his movie. The warrior ideal, social customs and religious contradictions were exceptionally well represented in the movie. Throughout life a man makes many decisions in which determine the way his life will be lived and the way it will end.
