Robert Zemeckis directed the animated epic Beowulf based on the Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name in 2007. Both film and poem follow the life of Geatish hero Beowulf and his battles before and during his reign as king, which ultimately lead to his demise. The characters’ flaws, the role of women, and the importance of family relationships are all significantly different in the movie which in turn shows the differences in values in Anglo-Saxon and American societies.
The first difference is that the Beowulf poem has a much cleaner characterization of the protagonist than the movie does. For example, in the poem Beowulf never lies or succumbs to weakness or failure. He’s depicted as the perfect role model for Anglo-Saxons. In the movie however, he tarnishes his noble reputation by doing things like selfishly failing to kill Grendel’s mother and then lying about it. This notable contrast indicates the difference in societies. Anglo-Saxons were obviously all about the perfect hero, while Robert Zemeckis was creating a hero that society could relate to and see as a fellow human just as flawed as themselves. …show more content…

In the poem, women are depicted as insignificant and incapable if they are mentioned at all. The opposite occurs in the movie. For example, when Grendel’s mom attacks Heorot in the poem, the “hag” only manages to take one thane’s life before retreating and later being slaughtered by Beowulf. In the movie, she wreaks havoc on the city and slaughters many. She also easily seduces Beowulf and has control over him for basically the rest of his life. This demonstrates the progress that the emancipation of women has made in society. From being insignificant and almost invisible in the poem to having powerful roles in the movie, women are substantially portrayed as powerful and epoch-making in today’s motion-picture of
