The educational system provides all members of society an opportunity to obtain a free public education until twenty-one years of age, in most states. The education system prepares and provides children with the necessary knowledge to become self-sufficient adults. What happens when the education system fails? More and more children, specifically minorities, are placed in juvenile detention centers or jailed. Today, many school systems developed zero tolerance policies which disproportionately targets minorities in comparison to their white counterparts. Today, more students are suspended and expelled which obstructs their ability to learn and engage in the school curriculum and extracurricular activities. According to Amurao, “students who are forced out of school for disruptive behavior are usually sent back to the origin of their angst and unhappiness their home environments or their neighborhoods, which are filled with negative influence” pp.1. According to the Bureau of Justice Statics (2003), “Sixty-eight percent of state prison inmates did not have a high school diploma”. Suspending or expelling children from school is a cop out as it basically gives kids the impression school is not important (Flannery, 2015). Inadequate knowledge perpetuates poverty which increases the likeliness of engaging in criminal behavior whether it’s for financial purposes or being involved with the wrong crowd.
