Dialect can have an impressionable affect on any story. It helps depict time periods, character traits, and much more. The use of dialect in “Sweat” assists the author in her attempt to authentically portray real African Americans. When Zola Neale Hurston wrote “Sweat” she was not writing for the white readers, but for the black readers. This is why her choice of ‘black southern’ dialect added meaning and flavor to her story.
