Zolpidem is a short-term medicinal treatment for insomnia. It can be prescribed and is effective in initiating sleep in the consumer. It also appears to offer a temporary but effective relief of symptoms of aphasia, a collective term for a range of language disorders present in some survivors of strokes, and current research is implying that its presence in the body may bring consciousness to people in vegetative states. However, there are several negative effects such as uncomfortable side effects, withdrawal symptoms if dependency on the drug occurs, dangerously impaired driving ability the day after dosage and it is an effective, legal and easily obtainable “date rape” drug.

As stated previously, it is possible to become dependent on drugs containing this substance. Huang, Lin and Chen (2007) state that a zolpidem-dependent patient they analysed was, within a year of being prescribed the drug, taking daily doses of 1000mg. She noticed anxiety, tremors and palpitation, and she soon increased dosage to 2000mg/day to relieve the symptoms. From here, on attempts at decreasing dependence, she suffered withdrawal-related seizures and amnesia. Also, ethical issues surround its distribution; for example, it is an effective “date rape drug” as it dissolves readily in alcoholic beverages and unlike the traditional drug for this use, the banned substance Rohypnol, zolpidem is legally obtainable in many countries by prescription; for example, in 2012 43.8 million prescriptions were filled in the United States. Zolpidem was infamously used for this purpose by Darren Sharper, a former National Football League player who slipped zolpidem into the drinks of four women whom he proceeded to rape. Emanuel, an attorney (2014) stated that Ambien has replaced roofies as the rape drug of choice as it has a short half-life of two to three hours and is difficult to

In the hectic pill-popping world we live in today, around 6.5 million people in the U.S. currently abuse prescription medication and out of those 6.5 million, 4.5 of those people abuse pain relievers according to Nova Science Publishers (Greer). Codeine, oxycodone, Adderall, and Xanax just to name a few of the favorites among abusers (Fahey and Miller). These medications can end up on the streets and in the hands of party-goers looking for a “good time”. Dangerous pills such as those listed above can be quite useful by people with authentic medical conditions such as anxiety and ADHD, but also have the power to be abused by teenage party goers that crave a

In 1997, there was a case study and twelve pediatric zolpidem exposures were reported (CITE). Seven were unintentional (ages 20 mon-5 y) and five were intentional misuse/suicide (ages 12-16 y). The regional poison information center was contacted within 1 h in ten cases with onset of symptoms within 10 to 60 min (mean 31.6 min). One child had no effect with 2.5 mg. As little as 5 mg caused symptoms with minor outcome in six unintentional ingestions (5-30 mg). Minor to moderate symptoms were reported 1-4 h after intentional ingestions (12.5-150 mg). The duration of symptoms in the unintentional cases ranged from less than 60 min up to 4 h (mean 2.4 h) and 6-10 h (mean 7.5 h) in the intentional exposures. Treatment consisted of observation (4),
There must be special attention toward the patient's addiction history before these agents are prescribed. drug usually works within fifteen minutes and has a short life of two to three hours ((“Ambien Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings,” n.d.).). Zolpidem has not adequately demonstrated effectiveness in maintaining sleep unless it is delivered in a controlled-release form. However, it is effective in initiating sleep. Its hypnotic effects are similar to those of the benzodiazepine class of drugs but it is molecularly distinct from the classical benzodiazepine molecule and is classified as an imidazopyridine (“Ambien Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings,” n.d.)..

In 2012 twenty-five percent of women reported having been sexually assaulted due to a date rape drug. Over the past ten years the amount of date rape rapes have risen tremendously. Many women are uneducated on the effects of drug related rapes, some do not even aware about how common the use is. While there is a rise in the use of the drugs people are still unaware of the terrible side effects of the drugs. Rohypnol is one of the most commonly used date rape drugs providing sedations so the perpetrator has an easier time to assault his victim.

Many disorders and diseases can result from abnormal sleeping patterns that are triggered from sleep deprivation. The most common forms of sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy (NINDS 10). All of these sleep disorders begin from sleep deprivation and can be managed once they are diagnosed correctly. According to Urban, “Nervousness, dizziness, and sleeplessness may occur”, as a result of sleep deprivation (1). This proves that the slightest health changes can occur if sleep deprivation becomes a problem. According to NINDS, “The disorders and the resulting sleep deprivation interfere with work, driving, and social activities” (10). This shows that the effects of being sleep deprived can drastically change one’s everyday
We hear the word Narcotic and most everyone knows this means a mind altering drug of some type but it is what we do not know that can hurt us. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary tells us that a Narcotic is the following: “1a: a drug (as opium or morphine) that in moderate doses dulls the senses, relieves pain, and induces profound sleep but in excessive doses causes stupor, coma, or convulsions b: a drug (as marijuana or LSD) subject to restriction similar to that of addictive narcotics whether physiologically addictive and narcotic or not 2: something that soothes, relieves, or lulls”.
