Antimicrobial Agents Lisette Vazquez October 27, 2013 Antimicrobial Agents Antimicrobial agents are utilized to kill microorganisms that cause infections. In order to be able to kill these microorganisms we must have an understanding of the factor associated with the infection. The purpose of this paper is to explore the different types of antimicrobial agents and the differences between viral and bacterial infections. Antimicrobial Agent Categories There are several antimicrobial agents to treat infections. Beta-lactams are the types ending in “illin” and those beginning with “ceph” or “cef” such as penicillin and the cephalosporin. The mechanism of action is the inhibition of bacterial cell growth by…show more content…
It is critical to isolate the specific pathogen in many serious, life-threatening infections, especially for situations that are likely to require prolonged therapy (e.g., endocarditis, septic arthritis, disk space infection, and meningitis) (Leekha, Terrell & Edson, 2011). The timing of the initial therapy should be determined based on the urgency of the situation. The selection of proper antimicrobial agent is essential to obtain the best results. Inappropriate use of antibiotics has helped create strains of bacterial disease that are resistant to treatment with different types of antibiotics medication (Masterton, Drusano, Paterson, & Park, 2008). When antimicrobial agents are not used properly there are consequences such as the body killing the beneficial bacterial that normally reside in the body. When this occurs the body become resistant to treatment of deadly illnesses. Summary Proper selection of antimicrobial agents to treat infections is essential in order to avoid overuse of antibiotics. Prior to prescribing antibiotics it’s important to accurately diagnosis the infection, defining the host, need for and timing of therapy. Understanding the different types of antimicrobial agents and its mechanisms is important to initiate therapy because lab results are not readily available.
