Are today's superstars really role models for today’s youth? I think they are! So many people in the entertainment business set great examples for our youth to strive for the best and most out of life. Take musicians they really come through in times of need. Take this past few weeks with the tragedies in New York City and Washington D. C they have helped organize relief funds and benefit concerts for the families who lost their loved ones. They went to the scenes and helped out by passing out food and water. This I think sets a good positive outlook for today's youth. It shows that not everything is about glamour and that these superstars are affected by this as well and everyone needs to lend a hand.

A lot of other musicians are involved in benefit concerts and recordings, musician like Michael Jackson , Quincy Jones set up recording to help people in South Africa fight apartheid and helped get relief to the millions starving in Ethiopia. In a few nights you will see 20 musicians sing for charity to help the police and families of those involved in the World Trade Center tragedy. I think this is something that is positive and it shows today’s youth what it means to be a human . Everyday a superstar does something to impress our youth and it is taken as if that particular star was talking directly to that youth.
“ Most of us are concentrating on the things that really matter, like our talents and goals. Music plays a large role in all of our lives, but for teens, music becomes especially important, giving a voice to those unable to speak their feelings. It is also the number one reason why many teens stay away from drugs. As part of a national initiative conducted by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, music was the number one response from more than 25,000 kids, age 9-17, who responded online and through the mail. "What's Your Anti-Drug?" is part of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, an integrated communications effort designed to educate and empower all youth to reject illicit drugs. In a collaboration with the
beyond contributing to the musical life not only to the community but on an international stage
When asked, many celebrities (sports figures, actors, musicians) state that they don't want to be role models.’(Cohen, E 2005;384)Aristotle would potentially argue that is was not a choice a person can make. As celebrities they are so prominent in society they have no choice but to be a role model and take the responsibilities seriously.
Part of why is that cool has become the dominant theme of children’s marketing. Part of the genius of cool is its versatility.” Tara Parker-Pope writes in an article in the New York Times called, “Under the Influence of …Music?” she states, “Only 9 percent of pop songs had lyrics relating to drugs or alcohol. The number jumped to 14 percent for rock songs, 20 percent for R&B and hip-hop songs, 36 percent for country songs and 77 percent for rap songs.” I cannot believe some of the superstars that will record lyrics equivalent to this. Whatever happened to the morals Americans found acceptable to have in this country? That is what Americans would love for people of influence to explain to
Speeches and music are great ways to bring awareness to inequalities around the globe. Music created by artists can help support many causes, through their lyrics people subconsciously learn about social inequities. “Known throughout the world, Youssou N’Dour is a musical peacemaker in his native Senegal and lends his words and music to critical campaigns, such as malaria prevention programmes.” (Da Silva) Another example is Oliver Mtukudzi, a musician from Zimbabwe, who helps raise awareness of diseases by shaping his lyrics to inspire people to help his causes. Yet another example is Angelique Kidjo, an ambassador of goodwill, who helps causes like hunger by singing about them. In synopsis, music has a major effect on social inequities and can greatly help change to our society. Lastly, speeches have had the biggest impact on our society out of any genre of literature. Susan B. Anthony greatly paved a path for women's’ rights by tenaciously campaigning to get women's rights to be equal to men’s. For example, she helped women get the right to vote. Correspondingly, in The Gettysburg Address, Lincoln focused on fixing the inequality of slavery and helping colored people gain equal rights. When Martin Luther King gave the I Have A Dream speech, he completely changed social inequities by greatly decreasing racism. “Africans found a particularly poignant
Some people, like King, portrays people to be obsessed with celebrities. In Palmer’s short essay response he states, “We teenagers are passionate - maybe even obsessed - about our favorite stars, but that doesn’t make it a big problem, and it doesn’t mean we want to copy their bad behaviors” (14). I think this quote makes it clear that, Palmer believes teenagers are not influenced by celebrities negatively. For example, the results of a survey taken by several 7th graders shows that, 0.9% percent of students are inspired to do something bad because a celebrity. Students, kids
For example, Misha Collins helped create the Random Acts organization. This organization is basically a community of people who try to brighten other people’s days with random acts of kindness, such as leaving a few extra quarters in a bag taped to the vending machine so someone else can have a drink or helping someone with lots of groceries get to their car. He used his fame to jumpstart the organization and now over a million people are part of the Random Acts community. Chris Evans is another example of a celebrity who uses his fame to brighten the lives of fans. He uses his title as Captain America to visit children’s hospitals and encourage kids to keep fighting. He shows them genuine care for their wellbeing and lets them know that he believes in them and lets them know that they are all heroes. He has brought a light into so many children’s lives and continues to do so as time progresses. He also donates regularly cancer research and uses his fame to get more people to support LGBT+ organizations. His brother is part of the LGBT community, so he encourages his fans to donate to and support LGBT+ charities. I could go on about various celebrities, such as Nicki Minaj who encourages young women to own their sexuality and not let men treat them like property and also uses her fame to encourage teenagers to stay in school. Celebrities who use their fame to help others are heroes in my definition of
In the article, “ The Impact Celebrities Have On Our Lives,” Deborah King explores the issue of celebrities impacting our lives, both negatively and positively. To begin with, she mentions that, today, we are overly obsessed with celebrities, whether they are positive or not. The author demonstrates that negative celebrities are more well-known than positive celebrities since they are mentioned on the news due to their salacious actions. Furthermore, King mentions that there are many positive celebrities that are famous despite the negative ones. In addition, she emphasizes that even positive actions performed by celebrities can get on the news, not just negative actions are publicised. Finally, King concludes the article by mentioning that
According to the book Celebrity Politics, approximately 10 percent of Americans get national political news from nightly entertainment shows such as the Tonight Show. For Americans under 30, the number is nearly five times as many (Orman and West 100). Citizens are looking to be entertained rather than simply educated by the nightly news. As David Schultz aptly put it, “ The new media cover politics, but only politics as it entertains, in part, because the audience the new media attract is a less politically interested audience than traditional news audiences” (20). The fact is that this American audience is less interested in hard news and more interested in
The artist I have chosen for this project is John Roger Stephens, also known as John Legend. Born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield Ohio, John showed musical potential at an early age. His grandmother taught him to play his first instrument, which was the piano. He grew up playing and singing in his church’s choir. His talent at that age was amazing, labelling him a child prodigy. Growing up, he listened to music from Michael Jackson, LL Cool J, Boyz II Men, and MC Hammer, very influential African American artists. They were able to change the way people viewed African Americans with their music, and make the world a more accepting place. John knew that he wanted to become a vocalist, and was determined to make his dream
Today we face many problems in society such as school shootings and social issues that affect everyone who is exposed to the real world. Kids are being corrupted at a young age, and since as a whole we cannot come up with answers, we immediately point fingers at the music industry. However, the world does not see what these artists try to do in order to mold the minds of the young to make them better and overcome adversity to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Throughout time music has allowed people to express themselves in a whole new way and has made it possible for people to discuss common issues on a deeper level through the lyrics of a song. As time goes on, the level of risk taken in songs and the line of what is and isn’t acceptable to discuss has grown. Many songs focusing on drug use have been seen as controversial. However these types of songs allow us to see into the artist’s world and in some ways get a deeper view of what drug use means to a musician. Both “Get High” by Brandy Clark and “Cocaine” by J.J. Cale, serve as good examples of how a musician can express the importance of drugs through their lyrics.
Charles Barkley once said, “I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model. I am paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I can dunk a basketball does not mean I should raise your kids.” No adult has a choice as to whether a child looks up to him or her, but parents are responsible for raising their children as best they can. The first role models or leaders in most children’s lives are in fact their parents; although they may not be the best role models, they are often the figures that children first learn from. Even if there was a perfect parent, that should not limit a child from observing other leaders. John Wooden, considerably the most successful basketball coach in NCAA history, led the UCLA Bruins to 10 NCAA championships with an all-time win-loss coaching record 885-203 (UCLA site). A Game Plane for Life: The Power of Mentoring, is a collection Wooden’s anecdotes related to leadership and the applications of those methods to his coaching practices. Observing leaders from the past allowed Wooden to envision clarity in the future; a clarified vision of the future gave Wooden more power in the present. John Wooden was a consistent and prepared leader who fostered a community of trust and knew his values.
. Even in today’s world social media plays a large part in pushing what success is when speaking about role models. The proper role models for youth are not deemed as successful and are not shown on social media or television. This makes it hard from day one for those who see something such as a positive example because it does not seem to be the most poplar way in school. Students in the earlier years are easier
Most people would say that in order to be considered a good role model, you first need to be considered a good person. A good person is typically a person who has empathy for others, tries their best to make good decisions, and follows the law. After reading this description, of what a good person is, celebrities would not typically be the first group of people that would pop into your head because of their bad reputations, but that doesn't mean that all public figures are known for their bad choices. Celebrities should be famous for their talents and skills in some sort of field, or they could just have a great life story and have done great things in their life which inspired people to do the same. After all, everyday people run red lights all the time and no one would ever know, but the moment a celebrity gets one traffic ticket, it will be instantly posted all over every single magazine and news station. Public figures should be considered role models because, many public figures can serve as inspiration to do great things and a great example of what can happen if you make bad decisions.
A role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive for greatness, live to our fullest potential, and see the best in ourselves. A role model is someone we admire and someone we inspire to be like. Most kids of today pick their role models from who they see on TV. Role models are a large part of everyone’s lives. Every person is looking for something different when searching for the best role model for them. But who makes a good model? The celebrities that kids are looking up to are adults that partake in adult and illegal behavior such as partying, drinking, and drugs that lead into violence. Would you consider that a good role model material? Celebrities should not be looked up to as role models.
