Moral Dilemma
Moral dilemma is defined as a conflict in which you have to choose between two or more actions and have moral reasons for choosing each action. In other words, it means that you have to choose between equally undesirable alternatives. It is also defined as a situation in which the person making the decision experiences a conflict between the moral rightness of a decision and the quality of the results it produces. As human beings, we are constantly in the middle of moral dilemmas. We are constantly marked by situations like this when we watch the news, read the newspaper, or listen to the radio A recent moral dilemma occurred in New York. On July 17th, 2014, a man named Eric Garner

Even President Obama said that Mr. Garner’s death “speaks of the larger issues” of trust between police and civilians. The real debate here is who is right and who is wrong. Was Garner wrong for resisting the arrest when he had already been arrested several times? He was described as the peacemaker of the community. He even dressed up as Santa Claus every Christmas for the kids of the community. Did those gestures make him a good man even though he broke the law several times? These are the kind of questions the people fighting for his death should ask themselves. He broke the law several times. It wasn’t just a “young and stupid” mistake. He had kids and grandchildren, is breaking the law the example he wants to give them? Does being a good dad and a good neighbor make up for that?
Another moral dilemma we experience on a day-to-day basis is abortion. Many couples would give anything to have a child because biologically they can’t, but on the other hand, there is a teenager somewhere having an abortion. Ending the life of a human being should not be our right but we also cannot judge people for their decisions. Maybe that teenager did not have the means to care for that creature. Maybe that teenager was raped and got pregnant. Why would she want to be remembered of that
People from all walks of life face many ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas have consequences. Our worldview determines how we deal with these dilemmas, and guides us to the right decisions. In this essay, I will examine an ethical issues through my Christian worldview. I will also present other viewpoints, and compare them to mine.
Moral Dilemma to me, means having to make an ethical decision between what is considered right and what is considered wrong.
Eric Garner was a 43 year old African American man who was also fatally injured by a law enforcement officer. A police officer in Staten Island, New York claimed Garner was selling illegal cigarettes, and then the officer placed Garner in an illegal choke hold. A bystander was able to record the event on his/her smartphone. Although the officer placed Garner in an illegal chokehold, the officer was not charged with any crimes. The officer was only put on modified duty, and his supervisor was stripped of her gun because of failure to supervise.
“Officer Jeronimo Yanez, charged with second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Philando Castile, a 32-year-old black Minneapolis man” (Capecchi). “Brian Encinia, former Texas trooper charged with misdemeanor perjury stemming from his arrest of Sandra Bland, a black woman who was later found dead in a county jail” (Almasy). “Sgt. Kizzy Adonis, charged with failure to supervise in connection with the 2014 death of Eric Garner, a 43-year-old black Staten Island man who died after police to administered a controversial choke hold” (Eversley). These are a few examples of the mistreatment suffered by young black citizens at the hands of police officers that resulted in the death of a suspect. Throughout the nation, the mishandling of the authority given to police officers has increased and is not merely coincidentally occurring.
Issue: Garner, the suspect’s father brought forth that his unarmed son was wrongfully shot by a police officer as his son was fleeing from the burglary of an unoccupied house. He proposed a
Last year there were four unarmed black men killed by white police men. One of the men was Eric Garner, who was a
9 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old who had scuffled with Ferguson officer Darren Wilson, came just a few weeks after Eric Garner — an unarmed black man accused of illegally selling cigarettes — died in a struggle with white New York City officers. Garner’s death was captured by an onlooker’s video. Brown’s was not, and word quickly spread that he had been shot while surrendering with his hands up — an assertion uncorroborated by state and federal investigations.
On July 17, 2014, 43 years old black man named Eric Garner was selling loose cigarettes illegally on Staten Island. As the polices approach Erica to make their arrest, he raised both hands in the air and requested for both officers to not touch him. Meanwhile, the second officer came behind Eric and put him in a choke hold in order to restrain the 350 pounds man down to the ground. After he was restrained to the ground both officers roll him over onto his stomach. Within seconds after being roll over to his stomach Erica Garner repeatedly shouted to the police officer, "I can't breathe!", while he was laying on his stomach face down to the sidewalk pavement. Suddenly, the 350-pound black male died of compression of the neck from the officer's
Four years ago Danroy “DJ” henry Jr. from Easton, Ma, was killed by a New york police officer. Since then the nation seen the death of trayvon Martin who was kiilled by a neighborhood watch volunteer and Michael brown who recently just got killed by a policeman in Ferguson, Missoury. However, the story of Eric Garner is shown to be an ongoing issue between Eric Garner and the New york police department weeks prior to the incident. In the video, Garner is seeing expressing to the policeman that he was tired of being harassed by the same policeman and he was not selling cigarettes. During the whole conversation more officers started to approach the scene and eventually as Garner was speaking the officers moved to arrest a much taller Eric Garner. After Garner resisted the arrest, officer daniel pantaleo approached garner and put him in what is an illegal chokehold and brought him to the ground. Four other officers restrained Garner in the sidewalk where he repeated “ I cant Breathe” 11 times to the police officers that was in the scene. After the incident the police department stated it was an unfortunate situation of man who had previous altercation with the police prior to july 17th 2014. After the incident medical examiners determine Garner’s cause of death was due to neck compression, and the compression of his chest and contributing health factors such as asthma and cardiovascular condition that correlates with his death. On December 3rd 2014 a grand jury decided not to
According to, my research Eric Garner was not a violent man, therefore I saw no evidence to support the U.S News’ defintion of a violent altercation. Eric Garner was a forty three year old, asthmatic African American male with a beautiful wife and six children including a three month old child who loved him dearly. Mr.Garner was under the suspicion of selling loose and untaxed cigarettes. Mr.Garner’s friend who was recording the whole incident stated “He just broke up a fight”.
A viral video of Garner’s death, which was recorded by an onlooker, has spurred demonstrations about the manner in which the police treat African-American men.
On July 7th, 2014, Eric Garner, a grandfather of six children, was stopped by New York City police for selling untaxed loose cigarettes. As police officers attempted to arrest him, a cell phone video at the scene shows Garner denying the offense and accusing the police officers of harassing him. Pleading with officers to leave him alone, Garner states, “Every time you see me, you want to mess with me….It stops today” (New York Daily News, 2015). As Garner attempts to wave them off, police officers tackle him to the ground with one of the officers placing Garner in a chokehold as he repeatedly cries out, “I can’t breathe!” (New York Daily News, 2015) Garner loses consciousness and lays unresponsive at the scene for approximately ten minutes where he receives neither police nor medical personnel intervention. Garner, who was eventually loaded into an ambulance, went into cardiac arrest and died as he was being transported to Richmond University Medical Center. Eric Garner’s death captured enormous media attention and ignited a growing debate between civil rights activists and police defenders about racism in the United States.
“I can’t breathe.” A white police officer holds unarmed African American, Eric Garner, in a chokehold for fifteen seconds on the streets of New York City. Ultimately, Garner utters eleven times for the officer to stop before he died of strangulation, only for selling loose cigarettes. Justice is about being fair and equal. Across America, the African American community has been suffocated of their unalienable rights, just like Eric Garner, by prejudices and racism within white police officers.
The ethical dilemma is a situation by which it’s difficult to determine whether a situation is can be handled without disappointing both sides. Therefore, an ethical dilemma exists when the right thing to do is clear or when members of the healthcare team cannot agree on the right thing to do. Ethical dilemmas require negotiation of different points of view (potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall 2011pg 78).
Ethics can be dangerous to your career. The danger may come not from your own ethics but from the ethics of people around you and the organization of which you are a part. Employees have various moral decisions to make. Many of these decisions should be made on the basis of our moral obligations, but sometimes the morally preferable action could require courage and be performed beyond the call of duty. One defense against involvement in wrongdoing is vocalizing when there are unethical practices being made. While being prepared for organizational challenges that will inevitably test your personal values, moral beliefs, and commitment may be doing the right thing, is it ethical when one’s job is on the line?
