Good afternoon- to all the staff, the facility, friends and family, and all my fellow classmates of the 2017 Primavera Graduation Class. Impetigo is a highly contagious disease of the integumentary system. It can be caused by the bacteria streptococcus pyogenes or staphylococcus aureus, or a combination of both. Patients who have impetigo will often develop weeping sores that burst and ooze fluid. A honey colored crust will develops as well, after the blisters break open, which is caused by dried serum. This disease normally will develop around the mouth and nose, but can occur anywhere on the body. Impetigo is most commonly seen in children, but can occur in adults as well. Some children can have recurrent episodes of impetigo, and the disease usually peaks in the warm summer months. Impetigo thrives on the areas of the body that are the moist, such as the nostrils.

These can be transmitted through direct skin to skin contact with lesions or indirectly by touching items such as sheets, toys, and/or clothing used by someone with the infection.
