Research Paper – Final Draft
December 3, 2013
As the saying goes, “Our children are our future” and who you are as a child can determine who you can be later on in life. It is important for a child to be in a safe, comfortable and loving environment during its development so that the child can have the full advantage to become the best he can be in his future. My future career as a social worker will ensure just that. I chose this profession because of my own history. Growing up, I’ve had my share of social workers in my house. I experienced them as people who helped my family during a hard time. This is a career where I can fight for people’s rights. I will also be able to protect

But also, in many cases you may be able to become employed by having a similar degree such as psychology or sociology. As of now I am currently enrolled in LaGuardia community College majoring in psychology. My plan is to transfer to Hunter College to get my bachelor’s degree. However, I do not plan to end there. I’ve learned that in the state of New York, a competitive and demanding need for social workers, a bachelor degree may not be enough to earn a successful position. I plan to complete my master’s in social work (MSW). From what I’ve learned on the Occupational Handbook, “a degree in almost any major is acceptable” to enter the MWS program. This means that with my bachelor’s in psychology I would be able to get in the program. In the MWS program it may take an additional two years to complete and in the state of New York it also requires a license (LMSW) as well to become a social worker. After all the hard work and challenges I may face academically, I’ve learned that I may also face emotional challenges once I have my foot stepped into the career. Although I believe I have an emotionally strong personality, this career as a social worker still can be stressful. As my responsibility to make decisions about the welfare of the children and families, I may be faced with difficult situations such as not being able to help everyone in the way I hope. Some of my clients or cases may be stuck because of obstacles created by
Starting my career as a social worker and working with children and families is where I feel as though I belong. I have the compassion, the drive and the withstanding endurance to make the area of child and family social work my passion. Working with children requires patience, dedication, resilience and so many other trusting characteristics. Relationships within children’s immediate families have a profound impact on their state of being. Becoming a child and family social worker is undeniably tough and arduous work but the reward of seeing families meet their set goals and becoming a stronger more united family unit come to fruition surpasses anything else. When I become a child and family social worker, my job days will be over and my career starts. Going to worker everyday knowing that I’m making a difference will be the best feeling. A great person once said, “It’s your mistakes that make you human, and it’s your humanity that makes you influential.”
Another reason why I want to obtain my master’s degree in social work, is to be as educated as possible in the profession. According to code of ethics a social worker has an obligation to be competent and knowledgeable. While working my internship I realized how much I’ve learned in my undergraduate courses and how much I didn’t know about direct practice. During my internship the agency I volunteer for serves clients ages 60 and older. Going into the field I knew the necessary social work skills such
Am I ready for a journey of self- awareness as part of the process of becoming a social worker? Once I acknowledged these questions, I began my educational journey towards a career in social services. A field in which I believe is my life’s

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me Thursday. I enjoyed our interview and was especially pleased to learn more about the different responsibilities that you have in your career as a Social Worker at Belmont Village Senior Living and also, in the organizations that you are a member of.
I started in the Human Services Program here at Columbia College with the goal of working in social services. I personally have been through the foster system and met many social service workers. It’s odd because as a foster child I extremely disliked these social workers I dealt with. I felt like they were individuals who were picking apart my life and ruining everything. What I didn’t realize was how much these individuals were really doing for me. Now as an adult I have realized that a career I once despised so deeply, I now want for myself. The purpose of this paper is to establish what being a social worker entails. Taking in to account a firsthand view from two individuals working in the field, Jill and Rae Lynn who are both social workers.
I am interested in applying for the School Social Worker position. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker with five years post-masters experience. I believe my education, work experiences, and continued drive in nurturing child and adolescents development have provided me with the necessary skills to be an excellent candidate for this position. My vast knowledge of the New York City public school system, clinical background, and strength-based perspective have strengthened my candidacy for this job.
Social Work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. I chose to seek a degree in this field because I find this to be a very rewarding career choice. To obtain a degree in a career that essentially makes a difference in people’s lives is extremely important to me. I have worked as a medical assistant for over 10 years, and although I love my job I would like to work closer with the people that I serve. I realize from working with people with intellectual disabilities that my passion lies with helping and assisting individuals. It takes a special person to work in social services because this is a field where advocating and assisting are a forte. I would like to obtain my Bachelors of Art in Social Work and work with children. After, I have worked in the field for at least a year I would like to continue postgraduate studies in lure of earning my master’s in social work. My ultimate goal is to obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work and specialize in case management assisting both children and veterans.
Studies have shown that this type of care brings about the best results. The use of
Social work has been my major since childhood. Throughout my life I have persevered against poverty, discrimination, domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health barriers. Due to my experience with these issues, the art of learning grew into a passion and priority. By focusing on my education, I established my identity apart from the status quo of my background and became the first woman in my family to attend college. Despite enrolling without a career path to follow, I was determined to explore for a major linked by science, integrity and compassion. Through the social work curriculum, my intellectual needs were met. The interactive preparation and self-care integral to social work filled the gaps that remained in my education and personal development by nourishing seeds of assertive communication, healthy boundaries and mindfulness; the benefits of counseling and journaling underlined in this profession have especially enriched my journey to becoming an advocate. In addition to this newfound peace, social work also spoke to my knowledge as a member of many vulnerable populations and expanded my ability to work with a diverse clientele. From the psychosocial and field placement components of this major, I discovered my deep rooted ambition to empower the mental health community in the same manner that social work has empowered me.
Types of degrees required in the social work field. The social work field has a variety of positions available to meet the occupational desires of many different people. Most occupations in this field require either a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree. The position that I found that was of the most interest to me, which required a Bachelor’s degree, was Probation Officers and Correctional Treatment Specialists, although the majority of the positions that were of any interest to me all required a Master’s degree. These included rehabilitation counselors and mental health counselors.
A social worker is an individual who has completed his/her Bachelors and/or Masters in Social Work, with work experience and license to practice. Bachelors in Social Work position individuals in direct roles of services that include some aspect of child welfare. Masters in Social Work give seasoned social workers more options which include social work therapy. Some individuals receive experience to work as therapists, while others go into the industry of private practice. Children may receive psychotherapy from social workers, however, he/she must have clinical training experience (socialworklicensure.org). Social workers provide assistance to individuals across the ages of a lifespan with various tasks. The level of education and training
1.Social work is not a career choice for me, it is a calling. During middle school, I was introduced to a student in my mother’s classroom, who eventually came to live with us, and became my sister. Before the age of three, my sister had suffered a great deal of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her birth mother. Social services took her out of that home and placed her into a foster family. The foster family eventually adopted her but, unfortunately, over the course of her time with them (until she was 14) they also abused her. When I met her, she had all but given up on having a healthy, “forever family.” Together with my family, I worked to change her mind and provide her with the love and support she deserved.
It is disheartening to know that America continues to find itself in a position to be able to state that any service would remain less accessible or below standard for those of racial and ethnic minorities. Honestly, I struggle to understand the mindset that allows one to be viewed as any less valuable than another, especially based on something so minuscule as the color of one’s skin or culture. Nevertheless, lack of equal care is an ongoing issue that reveals the discrimination that remains in society. According to Segal (p. 309), African American and Indigenous People are possibly seen as “more dangerous or more impaired” (2016). Some believe that negative mindsets such as these contribute to the fact that those of nondominant groups have
Social Work is a profession that offers therapy, evaluation, intervention and treatment for anyone who needs it. Support services are also offered to individuals, families, couples, or anyone who is dealing with psychosocial issues. Services are also for people that require assistance obtaining social and health services. The practice of social work is guided by knowledge of social systems, human behavior and social resources, and is strictly regulated to protect the health, safety and welfare of people. I would love to have a career in social work. I was not sure on the career field I wanted to be in, but has I research more and conducted interviews in this field , I’m sure of where I want to be. Though I had the basic knowledge about the profession in social work, doing more research I came to a conclusion that seeking a career in this field is best for me. A Social worker is more than just a professional that helps people, but they also improve lives. The thought of helping people/children delight me in such a way that being in this field will bring me a rewarding feeling. I have always been the person who will listen, observe, and take note of one’s behavior as well as showing love and concern to a situation. I will give the best advice possible as well as encourage the person on the best solution to a problem. Though faced with confusion deciding the best career field to pursue in, social work seem to fit my personality and my purpose. Everyone has a purpose
