Almost everyone has fears, whether it is growing up, or even a simple circus clown. For others, their fears might be as common as public speaking, failing a test, or not achieving a specific job. There is only one fear, which no matter how hard society tries is unavoidable: dying young. However, Housman explores the idea that dying young is not always negative. In A. E. Housman’s poem, “To An Athlete Dying Young,” he addresses this very common, fear in human nature. The unescapable outcome of death, as a fear, is due to human nature, with every single person wanting to live the longest most successful life, they can, but in the end never avoiding death.. I myself will admit to having a fear of dying young. I grew up going to church every Sunday being told that after death you go to heaven. This idea made me wonder why we all mourned peoples deaths, when in return we always would say a deceased person is “now in a better place.” Housman in “To An Athlete Dying Young” looks upon death as a positive thing in someone’s life. I personally connected and agreed with Housman, death can be positive, avoiding seeing your own downfall from growing old, or seeing someone achieve more than yourself. Dying young ties to my religion with a saying “the good die young” just like Housman talks expresses in his poem, of seeing ones demise, or being forgotten due to age. Uncertainties, in the human nature on the thoughts of dying young devour the minds of humans everywhere. However, a person’s fear of dying young before reading Housman’s poem “To An Athlete Dying Young,” would have been almost all negative. Housman relieves one’s mind by avoiding the negatives and boasting about the positives. With the imagery of the whole town praising one’s achievements instead of mourning the death, it insures people of how the town or a group of people will mourn one’s death but will remember the achievements one made in their lifetime.
