Sociology is the study of society and the different social structures within it. Sociology examines the role of the individual within society; it is viewed as the scientific study of society P1: An introduction to sociological perspectives. Functionalism: According to the functionalist perspective of sociology, each aspect of society is interdependent and contributes to society's stability and functioning as a whole. For example, the government provides education for the children of the family, which in turn pays taxes on which the state depends to keep itself running. Feminist concentrate primarily on ‘gender inequality’. The feminist theory is strongly influenced by the Marx theory. Radical feminist: Radical feminists believe that patriarchal society should be replaced with a matriarchal society. Concentrate on the patriarchal structure of society e.g. Noah. Society is controlled by men for the interest of men e.g. men will make it easier for other men. Radical feminists fight is against patriarchy (male domination) of society. Radical feminist include: Andrea Dworkin Catherine Mckinon Susan Brownmiller Valerie Solonas These feminist have focussed on domestic violence, sexual harassment and rape so they are not simply campaigning to overcome patriarchy, but also empower women. Marxist feminists: Marxist feminist focuses on the exploitation of women, especially in working class women. Critical of women’s current role reinvigorating their husbands and partners and procreating e.g. women should make men happy cooking, cleaning, coffee etc. Marxist feminist criticise women’s current role of procreation since according to them, this will only produce the next generation of workers who will be easily exploited by capitalism. Marx feminist are also against domestic labour. Liberal feminist: liberal feminist are also concerned about the exploitation of women.
