Is Air a Compound or a Mixture?

Answer – Air is a mixture, not a compound

Explanation:

The word ‘compound’ means that the elements/substances in it are chemically bound to one another. The word ‘mixture’ on the other hand implies that the elements/substances present in it are not chemically bound, but simply mixed together.

The air around is composed of several different types of gases, along with droplets and fine solid particles that are small enough to be buoyant. Few, if any, of these substances are chemically bonded. The molecules of different gases, such as nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide remain independent. Thus, air is a mixture, not a compound.
