Is the Moon Bigger Than the Earth?

Answer – No, the moon is smaller than the earth.

Explanation:

The brightest object in the night sky, the moon looks quite large when spotted from the earth. However, this is because of its close proximity to the planet in comparison with other celestial bodies in the solar system. The moon occurs at an average distance of 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) from the earth.

Considering the diameters of both can help gauge which of the two is bigger. The moon has a diameter of 2159.2 miles (3475 kilometers). The earth, on the other hand, has a diameter of 7,926 miles (12,756 kilometers) at the equator and 7,900 miles (12,712 km) at the poles; the difference is due to the slight bulge of the earth at the equator.

The earth’s diameter is evidently more than thrice that of the moon. In fact, NASA suggests that “If Earth were the size of a nickel, the moon would be about as big as a coffee bean.” Thus, the earth is bigger than the moon and not the other way around.
