List Three Functions That Blood Serves in the Body.

Answer – Blood serves the following main functions in the human body:

  • Transportation of oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to various organs and elimination of waste from them

  • Regulation of body temperature

  • Protection from disease

Explanation:

1. Transportation:

  • The oxygen breathed in gets diffused into the blood, which is transported to the lungs and then the heart. This oxygenated blood is further pumped to all parts of the body.
  • Similarly, nutrients (like minerals, vitamins, proteins, sugars, and fats) absorbed from food are carried from the digestive tract to the rest of the body through the bloodstream.
  • Hormones released by endocrine glands into the blood are delivered to the appropriate target cells.
  • Additionally, wastes generated by various body systems are transported to the organs removing them through blood; these organs then remove waste from the body.

2. Temperature regulation: Blood maintains the right body temperature through its movement from the core to the periphery of the body (for cooling) or vice versa (for warming).

3. Protection: Leukocytes (or WBCs) in the blood protect the body from infection by engulfing and destroying foreign bodies.
