What are Gametes?

Answer – Gametes are sex cells involved in an organism’s reproduction.

Explanation:

Cells can be of two types – somatic cells and gametes. Barring reproduction, all the functions for an organism’s survival are performed by somatic cells.

Gametes are solely responsible for reproduction, and are further divided into two, sperm (male) and egg or ova (female). Each type is haploid, i.e. it carries only one set of chromosomes. They undergo meiotic cell division, and in order for the organism’s reproduction to occur, the male and female gametes must fuse to produce a diploid offspring.
