What are the Five Oceans?

Answer – The five oceans on Earth are the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and the Southern or Antarctic Ocean.

Explanation:

An ocean is a large body of salt water. There are five oceans on Earth and they collectively cover about 70% of its surface.

The largest ocean is the Pacific Ocean. It contains nearly half of all water on the planet, and extends from the western coasts of the two American continents to the eastern coasts of Asia and Australia. The regions along which the Pacific Ocean meets these four continents are also areas that frequently experience earthquakes and volcanic activity. They are collectively called the Ring of Fire.

The second largest ocean is the Atlantic Ocean. It lies between the eastern coasts of North and South America and the western coasts of Europe and Africa. An S-shaped ocean, it has historically been the most traversed ocean. Several trade routes ran across it, and it was heavily explored by some explorers such as Christopher Columbus.

The Indian Ocean is bordered by the eastern coast of Africa, Asia and the western coast of Australia. It is surrounded by some of the most densely populated land on Earth. During the 17th to 19th centuries, several spice routes lay across the Indian Ocean.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean, and was formerly regarded to be a sea. It lies around the North Pole, and is also relatively shallow. It contains polar ice and glaciers that in recent years have witnessed accelerated melting due to climate change.

The Southern Ocean is the most recognized ocean. Sometimes also referred to as the Antarctic Ocean, it surrounds Antarctica. Like the Arctic Ocean, it too features a harsh and extreme climate.
