What is H Anion?

Answer – H anion is a hydrogen ion with a -1 charge. It is commonly known as a hydride ion and is represented by H⁻.

Explanation:

Hydrogen has an atomic number 1. Therefore, its neutral atom has 1 proton and 1 electron.

To achieve a stable electronic configuration, hydrogen generally loses its single electron to form a cation with a +1 charge. However, in some cases, it may instead gain an electron and fulfill the duet rule (to have no more than 2 electrons in its valence shell). The result then is the negatively charged hydride ion. Free Hions are known to occur only in very extreme conditions.

The term “hydride” is also applied to any compound in which hydrogen is covalently bonded to other atoms. Such compounds are formed between hydrogen and most other elements, with the exceptions of noble gases and a few others.
