What is Melatonin?

Answer – Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone, is a hormone produced in the pineal gland that is important for regulating sleep and the body’s circadian rhythm.

Explanation:

The pineal gland releases a hormone called melatonin. This release is dictated by the presence or absence of light. As it gets darker toward the end of the day, the production and release of melatonin steps up. It prepare the body for sleep.

The release of melatonin is an important aspect of the body’s circadian rhythm that regulates internal processes over the course of twenty four hours. Improper production of melatonin can disrupt the circadian rhythm.

Melatonin supplements are used to address decreased production of melatonin, or to try to impact the circadian rhythm. However, their long-term, over- or improper use can have side effects.
