What is the Difference Between a Hypothesis and a Theory?

Answer – The difference between a hypothesis and a theory is that the former refers to assumptions made before conducting any research, while the latter is an explanation arrived at after research and testing.

Explanation:

The terms hypothesis and theory are commonly used in the sciences, physical or otherwise. Both words are related to research and explanation of phenomena. However, they are very different.

A hypothesis is an assumption a researcher may make before beginning the experimentation. It is not substantiated, and simply suggests the relationship(s) that could exist between various factors, or a possible explanation for a phenomena. Its formulation is important to guide the direction the research process takes. The conclusion of the process may prove the hypothesis to be true or false.

On the other hand, a theory is an explanation that is arrived at after considerable research and observation. While it does not equal fact, it is backed with a significant amount of data and evidence. Theories have usually gained wide consensus, and are often taken to be true.
