What is the Function of the Cell Membrane?

Answer – The function of the cell membrane is to separate the cytoplasm from its surroundings and to regulate the substances going in and out of the cell.

Explanation:

The cell membrane provides a boundary that marks out the cell as a distinct entity. It defines the dimensions, shape and contents of the cell by enveloping them. It is, in fact, essential for the definition of the cell body.

That the cell is a distinct body does not mean that it is completely isolated and shut off from its surroundings. It interacts with the outside, as well as with other cells. Even as it preserves the integrity of the cell body, the structure and components of the cell membrane also make it selectively and semi-permeable. This ensures that the cell is capable of communication and interaction with its environment, and that the right substances are passing in and out of it.
