Where Does DNA Replication Occur?

Answer – In eukaryotic cells, DNA replication takes place in the nucleus.

Explanation:

When a cell divides, the DNA within it must be replicated in order to reproduce the proteins that define the nature and characteristics of the cell. The replicated DNA in the daughter cells is identical to that in the parent cell. During replication, the double helix structure unfurls, and the two strands – now separated – serve as the templates for the production of new strands, which then connect and wind with them.

The site of replication is the same as the area the DNA generally occupies in the cell. In prokaryotic cells, this space is the cytoplasm of the cell (prokaryotes lack membrane-bound organelles). In eukaryotic cells, DNA is enclosed in the nucleus, and thus its replication takes place in this organelle as well.
