Campistron, Jean Galbert de (ko
-pēs-trô‘). A French dramatist (1656–1713), a disciple and faithful imitator of Racine, and often called “Racine’s ape.” His finest tragedies were ‘Andronicus’ (1685), the dramatized story of Don Carlos, son of Philip II. of Spain; and ‘Tiridates’ (1691). A comedy, ‘Jealousy Undeceived’ (1709) ranks among his best productions.
