Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919)
Carnegie, Andrew. An American manufacturer, philanthropist, and author; born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Nov. 25, 1835; died in 1919. He came to the United States in 1848 and amassed a large fortune. He expended many millions in the endowment of a great number of free libraries both in America and Scotland. Among his published works are: ‘Triumphant Democracy,’ ‘An American Four-in-Hand in Britain,’ ‘Round the World’; ‘Wealth,’ ‘Life of James Watt’ (1906); ‘Problems of To-day’ (1909).
